I know that it's about as off topic as we can get around here, but I found a rather nice Family Tree builder (PHP/MySQL) online a few days ago and took my stab at my family's roots (we have a large list that my Aunt Barb and Uncle Pete made up when they converted to be mormon's); well in short the software that I was using not only took all of the informaiton in an hour (111 records in an hour, go fig) but I can also go to my son and look at a list (on both sides) as far back my great grandfather... Not only that but I can go to the Ancestery section and view it as much as 8 generations back... The cool thing is, the script does all of the linking, all I really did was input data on who is related to who and how (mother/father, sister/brother, etc) and it linked them all as the exact relation, it came out quite nice. The software itself cost a measly $5, it's called TUFaT (The ULTIMATE Family ancestry Tree) ; you can see my tree here . The cool thing about this script is that if you have numerous familys to create tree's for (such as a friend or acquantence) you can run multiple seperate trees on one install... Additionally it also has a backup script built into it... It's a really nice piece of software for such a low cost; the cost is mainly what made me sway from coding one myself as I'd spend much more time than what $5 could have gotten me... PLUS it also allows you to export files to GEDCOM format which is readable from most geneology programs that you can download...

Nice work There's another nice script out there: "The Next Generation" geneaology software: http://tng.lythgoes.net/software.php It's a little more money ($27), but has lots of features and is easily customizable too. I'm using it on a family site I hope to eventually open to my family

It's pretty nice, to see a demo, go here : http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/demoframes-public.html and click on the template links in the upper right to see how it looks with the 4 default templates to choose from

Very interesting.. I see that they support GEDCOM imports and exports; just like my current; I may shell out $27 for a license just to compare the two with the data I have ... I do like their templates a bit more; as well as the way data is outlined; any idea how they are with support? Mine sucks with the solution i went with; supposidly they only do user to user support which is a complete pain... Also, can you delete users in yours? for whatever reason I can't delete users or even edit the gender of users once they've been added (somehow i listed my niece as being a male)..

I believe it's all editable by the admin, I haven't tested with other users.
They have support forums tho the author isn't very active. He does update the script pretty regularly tho:
5.0.0 - 14 May 2005 5.0.1 - 24 May 2005 5.0.2 - 6 June 2005 5.0.3 - 21 June 2005 5.0.4 - 14 Jul 2005
There are integrations for 'nuke' and mambo modules, etc.

Interesting; I had taken and emailed the admin and got a response within half an hour, which is pretty impressive considering that I emailed him at 9a and had expected to at least wait until the evening...
I'm all in all quite impressed and will likely be converting (not like I paid much for my original solution)...

Yeh, I tend to like to tear things apart ... It does seem like it'll be a fun project and I definately like the way his script outlays multiple marriages (such as my mother with 6 children over 4 relationships)... I wanted to see how my data would look from my GEDCOM output from MyFamilyTree so I asked if he could throw up a demo and had one up within 10 minutes; the support is definately pretty good! That and just about anything that i could have asked for was made possible quite quickly... I definately enjoy that I can assign a password to a certain portion of my tree (or even a secondary tree) for people to be able to update! definately will save time .

looks nice but this kind of applications must be a desktop-app instead of a web-app IMHO... You are limited with browser capabilities...

true, tho I think the good points about being able to share with far-flung family members far outweighs the drawbacks there. I've got Ayres peeps all over the US

The benefits Burak are thus, you can import and export from a GEDCOM database, so you could use an application such as MyFamilyTree to import the database, make any changes, then export them to the web application...
I did find one thing that I liked though; I get to specify steppatents and adopted parents with the script allen is using... it's very promising...

Mine is (as always) http://tree.corthell.info/ (and http://tree.corthell.net/) I've compiled all the information that my great aunt compiled when she became a mormon; additionally i've been doing some work with the reports section wherein trying to get it to list all birthdays in the db via month when requested which will coherse others into wanting info added so they can easily update calendars ...

Glorious 6.0 announcement recieved, though it's a $12 upgrade fee hehe... I'll probably have some spare cash next month, not entirely sure, things are tight right now ... 5.1.4 came out in June: 1. True dates (calculated on import) were getting zeros for the day of the month (fixed). 2. On the individual page, the blank line at the end of the list of citations was removed, and the indent style was adjusted to work better with both IE and Firefox. 3. Users who were not assigned to a tree and who did not have rights to see living data were getting a database error (fixed). 4. Notes were sometimes being sorted incorrectly (fixed). 5. The GEDCOM importer was always skipping the line immediately following "1 SOUR" (fixed). 6. The GEDCOM exporter was outputting "1 CONT" when it should have been outputting "2 CONT" (fixed). 7. The GEDCOM exporter was outputting blank lines in some cases (fixed). 8. Special characters in an image file name would not allow that image to be previewed in Add New/Edit Photos (fixed). 9. HTML validation improved in some spots. 10. Custom Event Type definitions were being misidentified in the importer when the type description was longer than one line (fixed). 11. Headstones that were linked directly to a cemetery were still being shown with the rest of the headstones for that cemetery, instead of just at the top of the page (fixed). 12. Children of single parents were being orphaned when the parent was merged with another individual (fixed). 13. Source notes were being lost on export (fixed). 14. Events with no data (ie, just a "Y") were being lost on export (fixed). 15. The "tentative edit" window was displaying "Living" instead of the subject's name, even if the user had living rights (fixed). 16. The Merge routine was incorrectly displaying "Sealed to Parents (LDS)" when it should have said "Sealed to Spouse (LDS)" (fixed). 17. The Merge routine was not displaying the "Baptism (LDS)" field (fixed). 18. Default photo thumbnails were not being displayed for living individuals if "Show Living Data" was set to "Always" (fixed). 19. Adding a new State/Province/Shire/Country in browsers other than IE no longer requires a refresh in order to see the newly added item (fixed). 20. Users with edit rights for a specific branch could edit individuals assigned to other branches if "Show Living Data" was set to "Always" (fixed). 21. Anti-spam measures improved regarding the "Suggest" feature.
And I can get it free with my v5 license so i'll probably just upgrade to that for now... So many things that I want to play with ...

THis is kinda sad, I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to stay with TNG... I just upgraded the server to PHP5/MySQL5 (which are now pretty much standards) and TNG doesn't run on it (the user lookup dies)...
I'm pretty confident and sure I can upgrade the files myself, and may give it a go... likely Darrin didn't code for register globals to be off, but I sent him an email to hear his thoughts on it...

If you do it, post it in their forum so it will be adopted by their main support guys... that usually helps darrin get it into the base code

yeh I emailed hm last night, haven't gotten to check that email today yet though; I will likely pay for the upgrade to the latest build then hack in some php5/reg globals off support (honestly, it really ins't that hard).
One thing to keep in mind is that, from what i hear, safemode and registerglobals won't be an option in PHP6, so cleaning them up in php5 should be a priority for programmers...

Just read Darrin's email, he said that there are indeed issues with TNG running in PHP5, but he's relatively sure that they've all been fixed with TNG6... I'll test it out when i have the $ to upgrade.

It does Ate lunch with a physician today and she told me of something she's done recently - she submitted her blood for a mitochondrial DNA test through: http://www.familytreedna.comYou can trace your ancestral history through your bloodlines - exactly, no hearsay, no guessing... you can trace through your mother's line if you are female, or if you are male, through your mother's or father's line. Looks really cool, I think I'll join one of the surname projects and give it a try. Would be very cool to know your bloodline back for hundreds and hundreds of years

You don't have to know your father - a 'y' dna match would give you your bloodline through your father, his father, his father, his father, his father, and so on...

You don't have to know your father - a 'y' dna match would give you your bloodline through your father, his father, his father, his father, his father, and so on... Well, that'd be exactly what I'd want then... Due to circumstances in my conception my mother has no interest in allowing me to know such information, yet I'm entirely heart set on getting my family tree in a somewat complete state... It'd seem however that the item I'd need would be the expensive plan, as I don't know much abbout my mothers family as well... So the family tree thus far only goes back to the late 1800s and i'd like to see it a bit more full.

Check to see if your last name already is in a surname project, you can join the project and get the tests at the group rate.

Well, that may be an issue... I'm not technically a "Corthell" as it's my moms married name; and her maiden is Covey, but she's not technically a covey because she was adopted; so then it'd be so then it'd be Ridenhour or Dudley... All of which are in their database, so I wonder what I'd sign up for; and what kind of discount i'd get...

Just received an update for anyone running a TNG version prior to 6.0.4, there is a security issue fixed in the new version which could allow users to download scripts to your website and render you completely SOL, a prompt upgrade is recommended (received an email from Darrin last night).

FYI, there is a remote execution hack out for TNG versions prior to 6.1.0; I got hit with it today and it tore my resources up. I highly advise anyone running TNG to upgrade immediately.

23 eggdrop installs, 4 PsyBNC's... A field day of repair'ing lol... I also locked down the admin directory for any future issues (setup a small member area using .htpasswd).
Darrin is usually really good about getting emails out about security issues, but not this time; found out the hard way (so what if I get bored and I see things loading slow i load up 'top' and sit there watching the screen for an hour)...

Would be very cool to know your bloodline back for hundreds and hundreds of years Cool, I've been working back through our family tree again. I finally found the town my dad's lineage goes back to in Ireland: Antrim, Ireland I had to find that out to get the group rate for the DNA test

Though I found a detail about a possible father link that sickens me and I am not sure i even want to know anymore... turns out my older siblings and I may share the same dad... LOOOOONG story, especially why my mom would refuse to tell me either way...

We live in Texas - my dad's side is from Maryland/Penn, my mom's side is from Texas/Louisiana - tracing back through both sides it looks like they both come from Pennsylvania - I haven't checked yet, but I wonder how close Chester, PA and Canonsburg, PS are? My dad may have married his cousin Would have been a 15th-20th cousin, but still

TNG v7 was released. Loads of new changes... Was thinking, wasn't v6 just out like 6 months ago? You'd think that $12 every 6 months to renew gets kinda up there with renewals lol...

I think he needs to nest the files into folders; it's filthy when you look at everything thrown into one directory...
