Just curious, what is InfoPop going to do about web hosts banning their boards?

This is from F5Hosting.com:

"Beginning August 16, 2001, we will not allow any UBB or yaBB bulletin board systems to operate on our servers. These BB's are using flat files and put undue stress on the servers. For this reason, we will disallow these BB's to run on our servers."

They are probably trying to reduce the bandwith a UBB uses so they are allowed on more servers.

Bandwidth has little to do with it.

Most web hosting providers actively manage the load on their servers by ensuring that they are not packed with clients, and moving high load clients to more capable machines.

The company involved (and their resellers and agents, that compose the vast majority of the "other" hosts that have followed suit) decided to target UBB rather than the clients that, very frankly, have no business being on shared hosting in the first place.

In other words, their solution was not the proper one for anyone involved. The small handful of sites running large, overloading UBBs should have been moved to more capable servers, and the clients should have paid the $$$ required to do so.

We invite the ban to be lifted - 6.1.0, with the Accelerator, is lighter on the server than any previous UBB. If they can manage their server and meet the needs of their clients properly, then there should be no problems whatsoever.

You are right...bandwidth has nothing to do with it, but server integrity does. We will not allow UBB or yaBB to run on our servers because of the CGI and flat files that it runs. This puts undue strain on the servers and it is my job to protect those servers for my customers use. If I had 10 or 15 busy UBB's on my servers and they were constantly down because of it, then I wouldnt be much of a host, now would I? As it stands, I have literally hundreds of VBuletins on my servers and the strain is miniscule.

So, we will not lift the ban of UBB at f5hosting.com until such time that UBB comes out with a product that will not put undue stress and strain on the servers. Saying that we should put the UBB users on a better server is crazy as we run 1 gightz PIII servers with 1 gig ram. This setup works just fine. The fact remains that UBB is a resource hog and we will not run it on any server that we have until such time that it is not so resource intensive.

Thank you for your time!

That's dumb. I'd bet you'd let Ikonboard to be installed on your crappy servers though, right? Ikonboard uses flat file databases as well.

Mr. Anonymous, I suggest you move to a different server. Try www.hosting4less.com , I use that and they ALLOW UBB's. You can install 1,000 and they won't care. If you ask me, I think it's worth it. Another good one is www.hostrocket.com

Hope this helps. wink

Mr. Smith,

"1 gightz PIII servers with 1 gig ram" You're not telling me the part that matters, sir. You're not telling me how many people are on the server. You're not telling me disc speeds. You are not telling me traffic. You are quoting hardware figures that have no bearing. You are telling me what you think someone wants to hear, not what they need to hear when they evaluate you, your services, how and why you are blocking them from their product of choice.

Frankly I'm not at all bothered by your comments here or your decision. You have a business to run and you have a duty to run it in the manner you think best and you have done so. No complaints there

Your Commission Junction link for vBulletin is front and center on your lead page. It is your only link of the type on your page. You make money reselling vBulletin to your customers. This fact would seem to compromise your objectivity in this matter.

Truth is Mr. Smith nobody here at UBBdev and Infopop will fault you for your decision. We just wish you were a little more up front about the "why" behind it. It just seems like there is more behind your comments then meets the eye.

Thank you,

David Dreezer

I thought that IB 3 is using a Perl database, and the latest beta release has MySql support?

On iB3 you can choose which database you'd like to use when you first install it; flat file, DBM, or MySQL.

F5hosting, get a server that can handle the stain of a UBB then!

Now now, guys.

Oh... and Ikonboard uses DBI to talk to its databases of choice - either an implementation of flat files or MySQL currently.

I find it... odd that Matt went out on a limb to create something that would parse SQL statements just to pull data straight out of DBMs (which are little more than fancy flat files as far as things are generally concerned - I/O is still the blocking issue for any system that has to read so much data...)

Come on guys, lets keep it at a higher level.

Mr Smith posted his comments in professional form and I tried to be sure to do so in my rebuttal. Taunting someone doesn't keep us at the high level of standards that we've accomplished, ok?

Thanks. smile

www.opentechsupport.com has almost 1000 members and 192 is the most online at one time...NO PROBLEMS with this.

www.ninjamiros.com with over 500 members

www.rapbattle.com with over 4000 members with over 150 on at one time.

As for the other comments, there are less than 120 accounts on each server that I have. And Navaho didn't "tell" me anything. Thank you for being the professional that you are, Nav.

I didnt come on here to argue the fact of which BB is better, I came on here to explain my position on why we won't allow UBB on our servers. It isnt because I make any money selling VB, in fact, I just started that program and have yet to see a dime from it. The simple reason that we do it is because we do not want to jeapordize our clients sites by having a lot of flat file bulletin boards on our servers slowing it down. If UBB ever comes out with a mySQL/php backend, then we will lift the ban on this BB. We have nothing against UBB or Infopop as a company, but we can not jeapordize the integrity of our servers to run the programs.

Like Nav said, I have a business to run, just as UBB/Infopop has a business to run. Please understand that I do not and did not intend to start a war here, and the snide comments about my company from some of the users of this board were uncalled for. Besides, I am but one of HUNDREDS of hosts that are banning UBB for the same reasons.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.
