Last time I went to the Counter Strike site , they were running VB - which I could understand, after all, VB has a mysql backend, a lot more features out the box, is cheaper, and tends to be more faster (please, lets not start saying stuff like it depends on the server or whatever).

I go there after a number of months, and I see they are running UBB 6.05..wow.
wtf, first that BlackIsle board running UBB (major board, lots of users), and now CS..

Funnily enough, the UBB is running faster on the CS webby than the VB ever was...

Just wondering..how? and why?

howdy soul, we've got a couple threads here on the very subject.

Let's just say they are both good products with lots of good points and a few bad ones... both scale well on properly-configured servers. UBB's achilles heel is its search feature and heavy I/O (improved in 6.1.0 final), vB's achille's heel is that a large number of concurrent users can kill the database in a heartbeat. Counterstrike found that out.

Good news is that 6.1.0 will be released soon and fix a few of the major problems persisting in 6.05 smile

I'm surprised myself but I've also heard of a person who prefers to run DNS servers using flat-file databases instead of SQL. HammerNode provides free DNS resolving issues. They are going to move away from SQL to flat files because of SQL-related problems. See http://insider.hn.org/ for more details (btw, I recommend it's service big time - it's free too!)

ahh
I've noticed that too, a large number of users on a VB board can slow it drastically.
It seems that the best board for a large nuber of users is quite close between the UBB and VB.

Hopefully 6.1, with it's reduction in I/O should make it the clear winner smile
