Okay once upon a time, we had dynamically generated pages, and the world was in torment. "My server is kicking me oof, to much cpu time.. " Then we went to html pages, and the world was happy.. Now we have caching..

Charles, Nav, I may be thicker than the village idiot but.. WHY?

I'm not saying it's good or bad, I guess my question is it weren't broke so why'd you fix it?

Trying to understand and learn..

The thing is, it was broke. It was...
Now things are easier on the CPU.

"if it ain't broke, dont fix it"
The reason i say it WAS broke, is because the server load was so unreasonable. Well, each page except the topics was generated on-the-fly each time it wants to be displayed, even if nothing changed since the last load. Now, each page is cached and the cached page is given. smile

As I understand it, Ted and company were in a big meeting throwing around ideas when someone (was it Mark?) mentioned how a certain web app that was being developed elsewhere cached frequently used data.

Caching was first implemented on OpenTopic, albeit in a much more sophisticated form.

It worked there and was adapted to UBB.

It might get interesting down the road. What happens when caching and the better code isn't enough to offset performance problems on huge UBBs?

I think the next step is a totally static board - everything is an .html file... EVERYTHING. It will be a royal PITA to generate and maintain, but the reduced server load just might be worth it.

Something to think about down the road.

Thanks Charles,

I'm guessing now it's quicker to update the .cgi files than to update an html page.

Wait a minute, with the no cache statements in the code for the page display, the server must always load the page, not the browser cache.. BIG mistake and more server load.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

No-cache meta tags have always been in the UBB.
