Hi !

I'm pretty new to CGI stuff (and almost as new to HTML stuff).

If anybody wants to have a look at my hacked UBB, here is the address: http://cat-people.net/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi

Nobody's posting there yet [Linked Image]

Comments and ideas (and questions) are welcome !

David.

The red is a bad thing, but otherwise the color scheme is nice.

A nice selection of hacks, with the ICQ and AIM buttons in a different (but not bad) place.

The striped background is very 'in' at the moment and is nice.

I would also add the non-js preview function, but that's just me.

Overall, a nice, non-cluttered board.

cal is right. The red has to go. For me, red only looks good if all the TD cells are plain black...it apears to look nice then.

It's all in your opinion though. Ya can't please everyone at the same time [Linked Image]

Hi,

Thanks very much for your feedback.
I kinda liked the red, but I guess it will go [Linked Image]
What about some bright green ?
Just kidding.

This was my first look into a CGI script and I'm quite proud of myself.

Something actually bothered me with the HTML code generated by those scripts.

For example a lot of pages did not use that table around the top of the page, the one that contains your logo and making sure your logo is gonna be aligned on all the pages.

Other pages also had missing tables making it hard for you to get the same look on all pages, like tables missing and your page not using the "table border color".

Had to modify also the HTML code for all those little warning/error/information pages like when yousuccessfully post a message etc...
They were completely out of synch with the looks of the rest of the BBS, like no tables, text not aligned etc...

It kinda irritated me not to have a consistent look on all the pages the user will see.

Modifying the Leshrac memberlist was also a tough one ! No tables using the border color, and had also to get rid of the empty tables (nasty when you use a border color) created at the bottom of the list when the total registered members are fewer than the total displayed on the page.

Now let's take care of that red !
And the most difficult: bringing people to actually post some stuff there! [Linked Image]

IMO, the ubb code is great but the HTML is VERY VERY bad. Apart from it generally looking cluttered, the HTML syntax is apaulling and the is no consitancy.

I like the non-red!

Well, for one second I thought you were talking about "my" HTML ! [Linked Image]

But then again I didn't do a lot of it on that page, mostly touch up the UBB's HTML.
And for a newby like me it was some kind of headache.

They could do a better job with that, imho.

Just changed the looks to make the red borders darker and use blue/grey shades instead of the big grey blocks I wasn't too satisfied with.

Still, this program is really a lot of fun.

Well, too late !
I have been doing this for the past 4 weeks !

It's like I was always thinking of some cool feature to add or change before I start using the board [Linked Image]

Just added the non java preview hack, this can be useful, thanks for the tip.

Also also thanks for the creaters of all those cool hacks and icons (light bulbs).

David.

Nice ubb!
Did you use header/footer to make those round corners? [Linked Image]
About red: I actually think it looks OK as a border. But I think that those green buttons don't look taht good, though.

Also, where did you get those icons, so they're transparent? Did you get 'em here? Can I use them for my UBB too? [Linked Image]

Hi ilya, thanks for the compliment!

Yes, I used header and footer to do the corners. It was not very difficult and I added it only recently after I had setup the rest of the BB correctly. Until yesterday it was the same without those corners and borders.

A table is started in the header and a cell is left open, the UBB is contained in that cell, and the cell (and table) is closed in the footer.
But I guess that's how everybody does it! [Linked Image]
Once again, the trickiest part was to modify the memberlist.

The red borders look good now because I made them a lot darker (it was pure bright red) and change the dark grey of the boxes to lighter grey/blue.

For the green buttons, well, I used the ones that came with UBB, the blue ones, and made them green, until I think of something to make myself!

I thought they looked good though [Linked Image]

About the transparent icons, I'm not sure which ones you are talking about....but surely you can use them, as they were taken from here mostly. So they are not from me except for the cat stuff.

David.

Mr Atom had an odd sense of humor - you get used to it.
