Im trying to protect certain users and topics from being deleted by moderators (maybe accidental, maybe on purpose).

If I accessed my server and changed the permissions on a user file, would that cause a weird errors? UBB would try to delete the user but it wouldnt be able to remove the user#.cgi file. So would the user be safe or would ubb simply remove the user from the user_list and member_count files and all that? And if it did, wouldnt a member rebuild then find the member file and correct the error?

The same on a topic. Can I change permissions on the file so it cant be edited (which is deletion).

And if this method is bad, IS there a way for me to make a user or topic delete proof (via telnet since the admin panel would be a security issue)

If you changed permissions, assuming that the code wouldn't try to "fix" them, you'd also prevent the topic from being replied to.

The best solution to this problem would be a non-technical one - tell your moderators not to delete the topic, and if they do, fire them. smile

And fire them the cool way, like Donald Trump.

smile Funny but not possible. If I fire 1 mod, or admin, they'll just get the others to kill something to annoy me.

But would it be safe to say that a file with a read-only chmod would not be removable and would not cause board errors? Its ok that the topic not be "reply to" which is what I want.

But when you delete a topic, or member, does the board automatically just update the topic list and member list? I mean, even if the file is protected, would the board still update its own member list file and therefore not show the user anyway?
