right i am very unhappy with one guy that keeps on joining our forum and then insulting the members and MODS and he changes his mail addy to hotmail ones or any number of free e-mail addys (and i have loads of members that have hotmail and free emails so i cant ban them).

and the worst thing is that he has a changing IP i have checked with the logs from posts frown so he can just log off the net then on the net and his IP will be different frown

please can someone tell me if there is a hack or there is a way to maybe use a cookie to store a number or code which can be banned so there is no way in unless he formats his machine or gets rid of cookies which i dont think he will be able to work out.

please please please this guy has something wrong with him i have banned him over 50 times !!!!!

Simple solution: Find out the ISP, contact them.

I only need to use RIPE (Europe IP address listing) to find out ISPs, but there are others for different areas.

Media Access Control address

Every modem and NIC card has a unique one "burned" into it.

SOunds like a fantastic idea for a hack. That is, if it's possible...

Yeah that would be a great idea. Banning trouble makers on dial-up is not easy. You can ban other members who have nothing to do with that person.

but you know that this could easily be spoofed and in addition to that most NIC 's MAC address could be changed via the windows gui and/or if you use linux or a linux/unix clone, all NIC 's MAC address could also be changed.

this won't have much affect on that specific person i guess.

There is a way to do it is just a little hard to do. Basically if you could find a way of doing an ARP request to the computer, then you could find out the mac, but that would require you being able to access the computers hardware to make the request. Its easy with a router to find the mac by doing an arp request, but you should be able to do the same from a pc, just a little harder. Plus each time someone logs on it would have to do a queury to find out their mac. I would love this feature because I have people that sign up after being banned because they are smart enough to know that if they change nic's or get a program like smac or even in some nic's you can change the mac like say in routers... then you can get a new ip and get back on.

There are ways of doing this... hopefully someone comes up with the feature because I would sure love to implament it...
