This hack allows your users to change their username. They will not have to have their account deleted, then resign up now.

This hack is extremely easy to install. All you need to do is go to http://n64vortex.hypermart.net/ubbUserName.txt. Copy all the text and save it as ubbUserName.cgi and upload it in ASCII to your UBB CGI directory. CHMOD the file to 755, and your all set. I recomend that you link to this file in the edit profile or maybe even next to the links at the top.

Enjoy

Just remove the period that is at the end of the url.. there is an extra one there... the file is there.

Hello. First of all, I would like to thank you for this great hack. I just tried it and it worked flawlessly. However, I have one question. Is there any way to keep the association with my past posts.

For example, I changed my user name on my UBB board from jonau99 to JonJon...now all my past messages posted by jonau99 is listed as "unregistered"...

Is there an easy way to tell UBB that "jonau99" is really "JonJon" and is a registered user?

I tried to update the threads to no avail.

I retried the hack and it, as before, successfully changed my user name from jonau99 to JonJon BUT it did Not re-associate all my past messages to my new user name. All my past messages say posted by jonau99...an Unregistered user. UBB did not know that jonau99 and JonJon is one and the same person.

I am running UBB version 5.45c on an Apache UNIX webserver at http://bbforum.virtualave.net

This hack (by looking at the coding) doesn't seem to have the code to do that. IMO, that would take some time. [Linked Image]

RE: This hack (by looking at the coding) doesn't seem to have the code to do that. IMO, that would take some time.

I believe this is a very useful feature, especially if you have a user who have posted a lot of messages in the past and want to keep the association with his/her user name after a name change.

Is anyone willing to write such a hack for UBB that will let users change their user names and at the same time keep all their past messages associated to them and not have them become orphaned messages??

atom911, I did everything you listed. When I click on the link to change my username, all I get is a blank screen. Did I do something wrong?

You did indeed do something wrong [Linked Image]

Chances are, you didn't change your path to perl to the correct path. That is the only thing that the script depends on its users for...

Please keep in mind that I am currently running it off of my home computer. So you will only be able to access the board when I am online. I plan to upload it to a server soon. Also, I am doing a lot of programming with it so things my change suddenly.

I looked through this script and noticed that it simply updated the members database files, but did nothing to the actual thread files themselves.

It's been my experience with changing usernames that not only the member database files must be fixed, but the following need to be done as well:

[*]search/replace old and new usernames in all forum#.threads files

[*]search/replace old and new username in all thread#.cgi files in all forums

[*]search/replace old and new username in all archiveindex-#.pl, archives.threads and Archive-#/archive#.cgi files (if using archives)

    [*]update all threads

    [*]update search index

[*]re-run lettercreate.pl (if using memberlist hack)

There's a few other smaller places too, especially if the user is an admin or moderator... it's DEFINATELY not as easy as it looks.

I've been working on automating this process, I'll keep everyone updated on the progress of the project if anyone is interested.

I'm getting a blank screen as well, and according to my providers tech support dude the path is correct.
