EASY CHAT HACK FUNCTION: This hack adds a chat room link to forum pages. The chat room opens in a new browser window. Although any chatroom software can be used, this example uses a free script that is non-java. You can use this hack to link to any Chat client. THE LOOK: My graphics guru, Linda, just put this together. See it in action here: http://www.coffeebeanshop.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi THE PARTS:1. This example uses a free chat script from Eversoft . I used the latest available, Version 3.6 2. The following line must be added to 5 files in 6 places: THE HACK:Make safekeeping copies of these files then edit them: ubb_library2.pl, forumdisplay.cgi, ubbmisc.cgi, archive.cgi, Ultimate.cgi The following examples were done on a 'virgin' UBB V5.44a but should be easily added to almost any version of the UBB. I've added it to V5.45c without any problem. See the hack in text form --> here <--.

I agree with atom. They can be OK, if they're PHP/mySQL ------------------ Thanks for reading! Ilya Administrator of Ubb Code Hackers Hideout Moderator of UBB Hacks Finished

How about incorporating an IRC or a Multi-chat chatroom?

I once(about 4 months ago) did the most exhaustive search for web2IRC chat clients that I have ever done on anything. What did I find? All crap, unless you wanna pay 500 bucks for something nice. Either you had to click a button to refresh the screen, the screen flickered, no options, didn't work, etc... I was thinking about buying some chat software and running an NT machine as a colocation machine. But, thats a lot of money. In the meantime if you find something good and need an IRC network to link to, try Idealnet, either irc.d0rk.org or irc.icomnet.net. Those are the only two servers on there, not much usage, but thats good. No server splits, no lag. Anyway, just my 46 cents. ------------------ Troy(Trekkan) RPG-Files Webmaster & Owner http://www.rpg-files.com

The only type of chat that I would advise anyone to install is server push - it deosn't kill your server. I'm in the process of writing one myself in C++, but it's months from completeion. Just a thought

That sucks... I was just about to ask if someone was working on a UBB integrated chat script. Hey Mutt, you might try taking a gander at EveryChat anyway to see what you think of it. I have a zipped file with all the good hacks for it I've found (there aren't many) included: http://www.donmar.ca/everychat36.zip This script, even if it generates high server strain, would be useful for small groups of people (moderators for example) to collaborate in real-time, and would make a nice compliment to the online.cgi hack I like so much. A good enough CGI programmer like one of you guys could probably reduce the load it creates considerably, too, in addition to the UBB intergration. Just a thought!

A package that is good and free that does not kill you server can be found at www.lyrisoft.com/chat . I have used it, it works great for a simple yet powerful chat. For a more powerful and customizable chat I use chatspace (also free for 10 users) that integrates into UBB very well and can use all of ubb variables, that will be viewable shortly at mimanet web board/chat . -Morbius

I use jpilot's jirc for my web chat. It's a java applet that lets you connect to any irc server. For those who don't like/have java, I provide a link to a semi-cheesy nonjava gateway to the same channel. You can see one of the chat sites here: http://fathom.org/teemingmillions/chat.adp Another thing I like about this applet is you can customize the look (colors, fonts, icon, etc) ------------------ OpalCat >^,,^< homepage: http://opalcat.com UBB: http://fff.fathom.org
