Around here its $2.20

But I heard on the news, somewere its up to $5

SAN DIEGO – With Californians paying the highest gasoline prices in the nation, one El Cajon station caused a stir today by charging $3.19 a gallon for regular self-serve unleaded.

The Texaco station at 1700 E. Main St. posted its sign this morning advertising gas for $3.19 a gallon for regular unleaded, $3.79 for "Power Plus," and $4.29 for "Power Premium."

Danny, who said he was a manager at the station but wouldn't give his last name, said he didn't know why the price was raised to a level more than $1 a gallon higher than the station across the street.

"They just told us to change the prices," he said, without identifying who made the request. "I just work here."

He said the station had plenty of gasoline on hand and that he saw no reason for the spike.

At least one driver reportedly filled up without noticing the price, and was angry when $60 didn't fill his truck.

On average, San Diego motorists are paying $2.123 a gallon for self-serve unleaded regular gasoline, topping the record set last week at $2.039.

In Southern California, the average is $2.085 a gallon, up 36 cents from a month ago.

Carol Thorp of the Auto Club blamed war jitters and price speculation by investors for pushing retail prices to previously unseen levels around the region.

"California gas prices are the highest in the nation," Thorp said yesterday. "Motorists should avoid panic buying of gasoline or the formation of gas lines in the event of a war with Iraq."

Those actions could create temporary local shortages when there is no real shortage, she said.

The Auto Club suggested consumers shop aggressively for the best available gasoline prices and find ways of reducing gasoline consumption through such measures as carpooling and combining errands.

In Los Angeles, the price of regular self serve is $2.076. San Francisco drivers are now paying an average of $2.140.

If you think about it, soon prices to ship will go up, which means store will have to raise prices, which makes other company’s raise there prices which could mean inflation, and we would have much bigger problem than our recession.

Yeah, everything is going to go up. All the shipping companies have been adding a "fuel surcharge" for sometime now... but I immagine that's going to go up.

I think it's like a $1.95 here.

In most European countries energy is taxed very heavily. Currently unleaded gas (lowest grade) is 1.10 Euro for a liter.

1.10 x 4.5 (liters per gallon) = 4.95 Euro per gallon (well over $5 USD).

Odly enough gas prices do not fluctuate in Italy like they do in the States, so $5 USD for a gallon of gas is the norm here.

The prices here in the UK are awfull (compared to Greece for instance). There was a huge strike and blockade of the oil refineries a couple of years ago but the goverment didn't give in. We usually pay close to 1.25 USD per liter.

When I drive south of London towards the coast (where my girlfriend's parents live) I have to fuel my Lancia after the round trip, whereas with the Clio it takes three trips - talk about consumption.... The difference? The first one is 2.00 Liter Turbo, the other one is a 1.6 Liter Diesel...

We're paying about $1.80 - $1.90 a gallon (reg. grade). If I wait until I'm closer to Lansing it's about 10¢ less. When we fill up our van it costs us almost $70.00. That's just really WRONG. My gas bill for driving to school and back is about $300.00 a month. And that's driving my car - occasionally I have to drive the van and last time it cost me $27.00 to drive to school and back once!

I heard in Italy it was over $5 / gallon.

The sad thing.... for me, for the last 7 years, my employer has paid for my car and all my gas. So I haven't bought gas in 7 years. But starting tomorrow, I'm self employed and need to buy my own. Thankfully I'm working out of the house.... so wont' need to drive much.

it's like 1.36 here, oklahoma has some of the lowest prices in the U.S. I sure wish it was like 99 cents though.

Yup, around $5 a gallon here in Italy. Since I work for the DoD I get gas coupons (200 liters a month) so I don't have to pay full price.

Everyone over there seemed to have incredibly small cars or little motorcycle/scooters. Guess with something like that 200 liters would go a good bit.

I also learned that there were no driving rules in Rome.

4 or 5 of us got stuck in the middle of the street after a heck of a lot of Vino. Scooters were whizzing by us on each side... and the guide saw us and said "what are you doing!?"

he he We were no longer allowed to cross the street by ourselves. Especially after lots of Vino.

Can someone enlighten me? We get crap from people about driving a full-size van (all the "vans and SUV's are supporting terrorism" crap). What in the world do people in the countries with really high gas/petrol do if they have a large family? With five kids, we couldn't possibly even fit in a car. Even our 8 seater van is cramped, with 2 adults, a teen, and 4 car seats. I keep wondering if these people would rather us drive two vehicles everywhere, as opposed to one big van, lol. So do countries like Italy and such have big vehicles, you just don't see them as often? (Don't tell me they just don't have big families, because I know better. )

Most people commute in small cars, and a lot of people have scooters. Some Italians have large families, but they'll all squeeze into a little car

Most Italians do not have vans or SUVs because operating them would be too expensive. I do see a few station wagons, but most of them are also built like economy cars (smaller "foot print" on the road than an American SW).

Yeah, the whole 11 days, I can count big cars on my hand. I think I saw 2 fords and 1 Jeep.

Of course... I was in a mega huge tour bus that was almost bigger than my house. That made the traffic interesting.

Prices in Portland, Oregon run between $1.70 to $1.35 . We're not allowed to pump our own gasoline here, it's a law that passed some years ago. In The State of Washington, prices are cheaper, becasue they're allowed to pump their own gasoline.
