I use tar + gzip for backing up my Linux Redhat server.
I had been keeping copies of the backups on a remote ("off-site") server, but the remote server is no longer available. Someone else has offered use of a server for storing the backups.
I want to encrypt the backups that are stored on the remote server, so that no one else can read the data. gzip apparently doesn't have an encryption feature. zip does allow password protection, but it uses weak encryption, which apparently is crackable. Can anyone recommend a way that I could use strong encryption for these tar files?

If you don't trust this server/admin then don't use their server for backups, I wouldn't! Does your server have a second physical drive that would be useable as a backup drive maybe?

The server is supposedly backed up on another drive on the same machine, but I don't want to depend only on that. Both drives could be lost if the the power supply blew up, if someone dropped the computer, if there were a fire, if someone accidentally typed in the wrong command, etc. That's why I like to have an off-site backup.
There are degrees of trust. Using strong encryption on the archives would solve the problem.
I found some links on encryption programs, but haven't had time to investigate them.
