UBB.threads 6.3 beta 1 has been released to the member area.

Some of the major highlights -

Version 6.3 beta 1 adds the capability to add or remove languages to the board on the fly, from the control panel. No more script hacking to add or remove a language for your board.
Also added is a language files editor right in the control panel, and a version of JustDave's "my Cookies" has been added to the FAQ to allow users to view and clear troublesome or broken cookies from their browsers.

New Features -

  • Moved all text in the administration control panel into language files.
  • Added ability to edit the language files through the admin section.
  • Added an option into the admin section to activate/deactivate languages. This allows for easy addition/removal of languages without the need to edit any code or templates.
  • Added an option to the mass mailer to send out emails one at a time on servers where Bcc mailing does not work.
  • Added in the last poster for each thread when viewing the postlist screen.
  • Added a modification of JustDave's "My Cookies" hack, with a template file. This allows users to delete all cookies from a UBB.threads site.
  • Modified showflat/showthreaded so the Board= portion isn't needed when linking to a post. This will keep bookmarks or links to posts that have been moved from breaking.

Updated features, bugs fixed -
  • Fixed a bug with linebreaks getting messed up when editing a post under Mac OS 9.
  • Fixed a SQL error when deleting all traces of a user.
  • Fixed a sorting bug when viewing the address book.
  • Fixed a SQL error in addons/ubbttopthreads.php
  • Fixed a problem with forums not showing on main page when deleting all posts from a user or deleting a user
  • Fixed a problem with forums not showing on main page on certain occasions when cron/doexpire is run.
  • Fixed a bug that would pop up if a post was moved while a user was replying to it.
  • Fixed a problem with the mass mailer sending out duplicates on some servers.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the year a user registered not to show.
  • Fixed a bug with the instant ubbcode when previewing a reply to a private message.
  • Fixed a bug with the userlist not showing all users properly.
  • Fixed a bug that was causing the post icon not to show up on the main forum listing.
  • Fixed a bug when leaving a pointer behind on a moved post made by an anonymous user.
  • Added in a check to see if a thread is locked before allowing a user to edit their post.
  • Added in Picture size checks into the printthread script.
  • Made some changes to showflat to add back in the [Re: Username] next to the subject.
  • Combined the welcome email in the adduser language file into 1 string instead of 3 seperate strings.
  • Made some changes to deletepost.php, so when deleting the last post in a thread the last poster would update properly for that thread on the postlist screen.
  • Modified the banuser function so a user cannot login at all when they are banned. If they are currently logged in they will get a message that they are now banned on the next screen they visit.

Rick's entire changelog has been posted at here

This release is beta code. As with any beta code, it may be unstable. You should not run this beta in a production environment unless you understand the risks involved. Returning to a prior release may prove difficult!

Here is the Official Announcement.

Onward and upward!

I think most mods will upgrade to 6.3 rather well

Yeah, should be fairly simple... and a few (like the whole last post and re: to who) won't be needed anymore.

Not noted on the changelog... or in the announcements that I've seen, is that a new file "faq.php" has been added. All the faq_english.php etc.. files are not used. This means that the FAQ is now TEMPLATED.

I'll add this here since I've gotten several PMs about IIP.

Note: If you are running IIP you either need to tweak the version number in the index.php file, or download the revision here.

Looks like Omegatron and I should have held off on templating the FAQs

Yeah looks that way. Oh well maybe we gave him the inspiration to finally template them.

I doubt it though looks to me like 6.3 is merely a bug fix and clean up of old issues like the admin section language templating etc. I think Rick finally found the time to do some spring cleaning.

Sorry guys I don't see that there is so much new. 6.3 looks like a big bugfix to me. I am still missing nice new features that other boards still have since months.

Hopefully 6.3x or 6.4 brings out something new.

The multilingual adminmenu is nothing new for my users.

Where are sub-forums, the poll update, integrated links, more options to structure moderator rights, an integrated calendar etc. etc.....

I cannot even understand why Rick is not adding some 'standart' hacks into the release after testing them.
Not every hack of course but the major stuff would be fine.

Don't need to tell you that other competitors have this already and that its far away from NEW PLAY TOYS. This is standard.

jluerken,

As I stated 6.3 has alot of bugfixes and a few MOD additions. It is still beta so who knows if Rick is gonna sneak something new in.

He used 6.3 as a CLEAN UP CODE version. He templated the language files as well as the admin area. He added area in admin section to add language files on the fly. Alot of behind the door stuff. Most things are templated now which makes it tons easier to edit them.

6.4 I know has the calendar slated for it. I do not know about sub-forums but that would be cool.

1. several hacks went into the release, maybe not the ones you're waiting for, but things like calendar and advanced poll system are already announced for 6.4

2. If you want to have a stable software, bugfixing always as a higher priority than implementing new features, so this is quite normal. Nobody wants a new release that has more bugs then the previous one. So changes are made step by step, which is a good decsision, in my opinion.

3. From my point of view, a forum software that claims to be for high traffic sites should be stable and scalable at first. Play tools are nice to have, but not that important.

Just to add my 2p's worth of comment

What has been important over the last few releases is to get a very solid foundation, and then to build on that.

Rick (and I am sure he will admit to this) will not get everything right, and he relies upon comments from groups such as threadsdev to help guide him, and the software development ('reply to who' is a good example) - however the software has had some massive changes to it, and hopefully is now at a stage where it can move forward in leaps and bounds.

Having a solid foundation will also mean that mods are easier to code and implement.

There is also no point in Rick adding new features, if those foundations are not correct - he would only have had to re-code them (probably from the ground up)

New features will come, as I am sure IP would not wish to loose ground to other forum software.

I have yet to upload the new version, but hopefully we will see few bugs, and the gold release will be around the corner. (However don't believe every you read from IP last week their monthly news letter said 'Look for Version 6.3 to move into public beta release in the coming weeks!'!!!)

I am sure also that features for 6.4 and even 6.5 are already being worked upon, but if they need other components in place first, then I am happy to wait

Yeah,
Software where you throw in everything but the kitchen sink won't be very stable for lots of users/posts.

That's why they add new features in slowly, so that they can guage how it impacts performance. This time the "re: to who" and the "last post by" hack were added in. Rick found some new ways to do those, a bit different from the hacks here, but they need to release 6.3 to see what kind of impact that has on performance. If those hold up fine, then the next round of features get added in. Too many at one time would be a bug nightmare and everyone would be afraid to try software that was too buggy.

I can't say anything better than what's already been said.

6.4 will be the release that it sounds like you're waiting for. Once 6.3 goes stable I'll post the 6.4 changelog which should make you feel a bit better about the future features

Cool - looking forward to the changelog for 6.4 - doesn't seem too many early bugs for 6.3 - hopefully we will have a nice quick beta run.

I have everything setup now. Drumlines.org is smoothly running 6.3br1. [crossing fingers] It seems I beat JC in making his templates compatible for 6.3.

Good for you.

I've almost got measurection.com ready to switch. I've been hacking me beta and trying to get it ready. When I make sure all my hacks still work, I'll make the switch.

My sites been super active today because of a bulk email incident.... so I don't want to monkey it up when alot of old users have returned.

BTW I love the "The Other Josh" in your sig.

That reminds me, I've gotta try out the new e-mail system. The old just didn't work for me.

And yeah, I guess you could say I'm "The other white meat."
