You also can't asign an html hyperlink to a background image -so how are you going to make the icons active links? By creating a transperent forground image to go over each one? Why bother...

I can't reproduce this. On which browser doesn't this work? Quickly hacking this:
http://krow.de/background_link.html works like a charm on my current IE and Mozilla. Or am I missing your point?
