Can someone tell me how to change it so attachments will open into a new window? TIA

Try adding target="_blank" to the attachment link.

Thanks Dave I knew the target="_blank" part (although sometimes I use target="new" as well -- never knew if it made much of a difference??). Where am I adding it though? In addpost.php?

You will want to make the changes to showflat and showthreaded.

Find this line:

if ($File) {
$File = rawurlencode($File);
$postrow[$i]['filelink'] = "<a href="{$config['fileurl']}/$File">{$ubbt_lang['FILE_ATTACH']}</a>";
}

and change it to this:

if ($File) {
$File = rawurlencode($File);
$postrow[$i]['filelink'] = "<a href="{$config['fileurl']}/$File" target="_blank">{$ubbt_lang['FILE_ATTACH']}</a>";
}

That should do it.

Files that the browser will try to download will first open in a new window to only have it close for the download. (well this is what used to happen when I did simular links)

target="_blank" vs. target="new"

If I recall correctly, "_blank" is the correct attribute value to use in this case. "new" is just a reference to a frame named "new". Unless a frame with that name actually exists, the browser thinks "Hmmmm, I can't find that frame, so I'll just open a blank window."
