we're in the process of programming a custom profile section for our site, which should utilize the same username / password combination for login as the message board.

our programmer tried the crypt() function to read existing pw's and insert new users, but the results seem to differ from what's already in the w3t table.
is there any special logarithm used or how does it work?

i don't think it does, it just crypts the typed in password and matches it up with the one in teh db.

The crypt.c library implemented in that source is the same one that is implemeted under php. We have successfully implented this algorithm with one of our programs (take a look at its licensing though), and have been able to check against passwords successfully.
