I have taken a look at wwwthreads for about a year now, and it still looks pretty much the same.

It would be better if it was template driven, it just looks too *basic* still.

They just aren't convinced about templates, I'm afraid.

So it seems, and it's a shame. I guess people who use links (or any other template based) realize what an advantage it is. I found that a lot of people who are not used to templates dont see it that way...

Carrying this reply from another thread:

It's not that I'm not convinced about using templates. It's just that I was not convinced at using them at this time. To properly use templates the varying languages should be in the templates as well. The way I was going I had to use the language files and then put them into a template variable and then parse them. Also, because there are different ways the user may be viewing the program it added alot of complexity. Plus various other things.

To properly use templates will require a rewrite of alot of the existing code which I'm not saying I won't do, I just won't do it now[]/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/].

We're still missing a few glaring features that really need to be part of the base code before I go about tearing into it and rewriting large chunks of it. If I had a team of developers it might not be so bad, but it's just me so I've got to use my time wisely.

I fully agree with this approach ... There's no point in trying to convert the system to a template-based one until the main system is stable and includes a lot more of the good user-written hacks than it does now.

In addition to that, as Rick has mentioned in another thread, many of his customers are using hosting companies and our access to Fast Templates, ModPerl, etc. is very restricted. We are basically at the mercy of our hosting companies so keeping the system as undemanding of resources and requirements as possible is going to be a benefit to us.

Perhaps, whilst waiting for the templates to come along, those who want to radically change the look of their forums should just hack the existing scripts as many people currently do.

Exactly! I think optimizing the code with that in mind, and adding great new features for everyone (which are not resource-hogers) would benefit everyone. I agree that templates are a good IDEA but if it means totally rewriting the scripts I think they are too demanding for the development and would reduce the quality and standard of W3T.

I also agree with Scream's post. I would like to have templates but I dont know what it takes (the discussion about how to do it is chinese to me) and I guess he does and knows which way, and when, to implement it....
