I have a general qestion on Linux that specifically relates to the installation of GNOME on Linux Redhat 6.0. I am upgrading my install of GNOME and would love to know how I can work out what version of each package is before installing the update, as well as where it is installed. I know that this may differ from package to package however is there any "standard" way of working this out?
I have looked at WHEREIS and this kind of helps but is insufficent. (I also admit I don't fully understand the output)
Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated.

If you're working on RedHat (I don't know if it works on other flavors of linux), try typing
[:yellow]rpm -qa
That should get you a list of all installed packages and their versions... I'm not sure how you'll track down where they're all installed. I'm still learning all this stuff too! []/forumimages/smile.gif[/]
Enjoy!

As MattyJ said, [:yellow]rpm -qa will give you the list of all packages installed. [:yellow]rpm -qi packagename will give you information on the packagename. [:yellow]rpm -ql packagename will give you the location of all files installed by packagename.
