This may or not be a mod. I cannot find anything after searching the site. Has anybody come up with a way to imnport members, forums and messages from a vBulletin messageboard?

This would require a way to read a SQL database and pull it in that way. I know about 3 dozen vBulletin systems (including mine) that is just dying to drop that program and go to UBB, but we do not want to lost our existing info.

vBulletin does a pretty good job of importing from UBB, but can we go the other way?

We (at Infopop) have an extremely unstable, mostly unusable import script... if you could express your desire to have one to [email protected] (and ask all your friends to do so as well), we'll be able to push it off of the "It would be nice to complete this" list onto the "We probably need to complete this" list. smile

Well, is it possible for me to get a copy of the script you have so I can test it? I am willing to try ANYTHING right now.

Not at the moment, no... as I stated, it's unusable. It does nothing more than connect to the vB database and extract the data at the moment.

It needs to be completed (i.e. write out properly formatted UBB data) and given a friendly interface before it's ever released into the real world.

Prince, I want to switch because UBB has come a long way. I like the information being stored in a flat file format.

Mastermind, I know that a script is in the works, but I asked a similar question about 6 months ago and got the same answer. I sent an email to UBB last week and got the exact same answer.

I think that the answer is just blowing smoke up my ass. I do not believe it will ever be done or that it is even being worked on.

My thoughts.

There is currently not much interest in a vB to UBB script. Why? Because the majority of users don't have this avenue ... most users are migrating from Infopop products to vBulletin and not vice-versa.

If Infopop saw people moving from vBulletin to UBB, then they'll be more inclined to create such a script but until this happens, you're right - they're probably not going to create such a script.

I think Infopop needs to wake up and realize that vB has everything already installed. It's like an automatically hacked UBB. Views, avatars, file uploads, polls, calendar, member list, everything is included. I sure hope UBB 7 is something that will give vB a run for its money.

nobody's making any of you use ubb, the guy was asking for a vb ==> ubb conversion script, don't turn this into a thread for your ubb vs vb opinions...

If I was interested in vBulletin, I would have no need for the script I am asking for.

vBulletin has a working script in place to import from UBB and it was very fast and had no errors at all. This is what caused so many people to switch to vBulletin in the first place. There was nothing to lose.

However, if Infopop has ANY desire (and I am not sure that they do) to get customers from the vBulletin community, they would complete the script and make it part of the basic UBB package.

As it stands now, the basic package has 0 import scripts so it seems entirely plausible that Infopop does not really care about this business. Maybe it is just not enough revenue to spark their interests. This is unfortunate for people like me, but I suppose it is ok for Infopop.

vBulletin's import script does not handle Smilies by DPK correctly so it's not perfect wink

Well qasic, Smilies by DPK is a hack and not part of the basic UBB. This does not have ANYTHING to do with what I said.

i think there is a big need for a vB => UBB script. i really dont like vB and many of my "friends" (vB lovein mooks) want to go to ubb after seeing the hacked job i and SSV did on are 6.05 . its not a bad idea and really sould be imported into the stock ubb or a prog. smile , it would be a good way to pull people back to ubb *shurgs* but watever

Maybe if Infopop make the vB to UBB script, people will start going to UBB. If you don't make it nobody will move because they know they can't move anything.

i dont know but the basic unhacked ubb are safe and made properly all the hacks are made by third parties and are mostly beta (not saying the hacks are not ade properly smile ) but it would be crazy to include beta hacks in the UBB.

also it would be nice if infopop included the bigger hacks like whos online and avatars and my favourite LK's Chat smile (nice work LK) because everybody uses these hacks

i like to hack the board myself becasue i can add the hacks i like smile .... BUT i do agree if there was a VB - UBB script then more people would move because they have the option 2

just my 2bobs worth

PS I HATE VB -- it looks tacky

I'll try to get us back on topic...

Here is the ideal...

Regardless of WHATEVER popular Forum software you WERE using. You would like to START to run a UBBâ„¢.

Since you don't want to start your community from scratch, and lose all of the topics and posts that your members made, you need a conversion tool, so that all the old stuff can be migrated to the new board.

Rather than having a tool to import *just* vB threads, you would be better served to have a tool to convert from most popular forums, including vB, Ikon, etc.

A lot of people would probably like to switch to a UBBâ„¢, but may be hesitant to do so for fear of losing old threads. Therefore a flexible tool would better serve both IP and those wishing to do so.

laugh

That's my $0.02

agane i do fell there is a big need for it, cuase i know LOTS of forums (yabb,vb,ikon even ezbroads) that want a ubb or a anthor script.

One of the BIG reasons for this is server moves and such, think about running a vb then your server dieing, then you find yourself on one that dosent suport mySQL. what are you ganna do? as of right now u can only do one of 2 things

1. let your forum die off till you can find a new server

2. get a diff script and start all over with no topics, no members smirk

[edit] only used vb as an example cause this happend to alot of my friend smile [/edit]
