We Want to help us find cures for Cancer, Alzheimers, Parkinsons and many other diseases!!!
Step 1 - Download the FAH Agent from the Folding@Home website.
Step 2 - Install the Agent, adding our Team Number (73963) to your agent's info.
Step 3 - Begin processing work units. |
| What is Team UBBDev? |
| "Team UBBDev" is our entry in the Folding@home
Research Project. Team UBBDev, otherwise known as the Semi-Official UBB
Protein Haxxors is made up of fellow UBBDev members who have joined our effort to help
search for a cure for many diseases - cancer and alzheimers among others. All are welcome and encouraged to join up! |
| What is the project? |
The Folding@Home project ("FAH") is dedicated to understanding protein folding, the diseases which result from protein misfolding and aggregation,
and novel computational ways to develop new drugs in general.
WHAT IS PROTEIN FOLDING AND HOW IS IT RELATED TO DISEASE?
Proteins are necklaces of amino acids --- long chain molecules. Proteins are the basis of how biology gets things done. As enzymes, they are the driving force behind all of the
biochemical reactions which make biology work. As structural elements, they are the main constituent of our bones, muscles, hair, skin and blood vessels. As antibodies, they recognize
invading elements and allow the immune system to get rid of the unwanted invaders.
What happens if proteins don't fold correctly? Diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, cystic fibrosis, BSE (Mad Cow disease), an inherited form of emphysema,
and even many cancers are believed to result from protein misfolding. When proteins misfold, they can clump together ("aggregate"). These clumps can often gather in the brain, where
they are believed to cause the symptoms of Mad Cow or Alzheimer's disease.
Much more information can be found at the Folding@Home project's FAQ page.

| How can I participate? |
| You can participate by donating your brain. Not your brain
per se, but spare processing power that your computer isn't using. All you need to do
is download and install the Folding@Home Agent program. The program runs in the background without
disturbing your computer, where it performs computation chemistry. After the program
finishes with its sequence of molecules, the results are transmitted to the Folding@Home
server, and a new work task is downloaded. The program is secure and will not detect
or transmit any other files from your computer. |
| What are points? |
| Each participating member generates points based on their
contribution to the project. Points are determined by the performance of a given machine relative to
a benchmark machine. Each work unit is benchmarked against a Pentium 4 2.8ghz machine. By joining Team
UBBDev, your results will also be added to our team total. |
| Where can I get the UBBDev Haxxors Avatar? |
| Your points will also determine your Avatar ranking. When
you join the team and generate your first results you will be rewarded with the Blue
Avatar. Thereafter you'll receive the next avatar based on points as seen in the list to the left.
From the beloved bronze bean at 10,000 points, to the coveted coffee bean at 250,000 points, and
even to Plutonium at 10 million. Remember, you have to continue to participate in order to retain your Avatar.
If we don't update your image after reaching a new milestone, please leave us a reminder by posting in the Team UBBDev Forum.
After confirming you've hit a new level your Avatar will be updated! |
| Where can I get more information? |
| Feel free to ask your fellow teammates for help, or check
out the Folding@Home Forums at http://forum.folding-community.org/
. It's a great site for information. |
