I'll get back to you when it's coffee time
I'll be coffee for a loooooooong time. Just shy of 275K, only 225K to go till Code Red
-Tacks
I'm eligable for the blue haxxor.
Done.
Thanks Josh.
May I have a Blue Haxxor bean please? BTW, I'm fighting smallpox instead of cancer
I noticed that mine is for smallpox too. Did this start after the smallpox scare? Or are youse guys still fighting cancer?
It all counts the same
When you go into your profile on their site you can choose which one (or both) you want to work for.
Ahhhhh, that explains it. Thanks Josh.
I'm creeping my way up to 100,000
My fiance turned her computer off this past weekend, so my points per day are a lot lower now
I'm going to try and install this program on every computer at the college, even though I'm almost certain it won't work (because they probably have programs keeping students from loading programs).
I know at the university I went to and worked at, they would boot from a network HD image. So no matter what you installed, it would be gone upon next reboot. Not sure how common this is, but that may be something to think about

You need to be careful - I seem to recall a legal challenge against someone who did that.
I would suggest you get permission first.

So then you would only need to install it to that boot drive.
well, you would have to rebuild the image, and only a select few have access to those. But yes, someone who had access could literally have that program running on upwards of 5,000 lab computers
Well, two of my machines are sitting at just over 99,000, so I would assume by this evening's update I will hit 100,000
99205... I want to be platinum
Should hit 100k before 1am
Who's in charge here

I'm at 101,000 and am still that weird green jellybean
Good Job Jeremy.
Sorry I'm so slow.... kind of a mother of a day.
So I'm getting caught up before bed.
Ohhh... he has a shiny bean!
no problem
And thanks
Platinum bean please.
The platinum is yours - well done - keep up the good work.
uh oh, DL is on my tail! I was pumping out one of the highest PPD rates on the team, but looks like you're going to pull ahead
My poor systems can't compete with youse guys at all. I am still working on bronze. Only a couple more days though.
Had to shut mine down...
CPU was running a little to hot and I'm waiting until I have enough spare cash to replace the motherboard in my test box, then I'll fire it back up on a mostly dedicated PC.
Only 60,000 more to go
Thank you. Thank you very much. [/elvis]
I just made one million. I need a new image please. Uh, and no database diving was involved.
Good work navaho.
Congrats Navaho.
Way to be Nav. I can't believe that I'm still working on getting to 10k. Of coarse this poor laptop is my workhorse and I can use most of my systerm resources without the agent running.
Doesn't matter how fast or slow you are - it is the taking part that counts
Life is not a race (unless I am behind

Ian is right. There was legal implications for an administrator that installed the distributed.net password cracker (to break the DES and RSA encryption algorithms) in his university computers. Not good.
Josh, Could I please get the Coffee for me?
253K and still going strong!!
Well done - Josh will need to do this as you say, as I can't update Mods
Slayer, even were you to be working on point number 1 I would still clap my hands for you. The fact that you are contributing is what counts.
I just noticed - I am in the
Top 500 (no. 489 in case you are wondering
)
Dang! I am not even in the top 5000 in the points
I think I'm up to 70 something in the team for points
Nikos - Done!
Yes, kudos to everyone who is participating......
I think even sassy is doing this? Sassy - how is it coming?
Thanks Josh
I'm in 12th place on TeamUBBDEV!!!!*
*Alphabetically
Bronze please. I finally made it past 10k.
eace:
Bronze is your - congratulations
Thank you. I would like to thank all citizens of my CPU for thier tireless efforts...and only taking occasional breaks to do the bike thing.
Slayer!
Great work!
Well done Slayer... I am actually trying to convince my boss to install it on all the servers. Since his mom died of cancer I don't think that this would be an issue but then again he is a bit of an a$$ so ... Let's see...
Thanks for the props guys. Its wierd how the My Device score bounces around. The other day it was giving my 3COM Megahertz 10/100 a 51, now it is giving it a 113. When my overall My Device rating drops I know it is because the user agent in mad at my NIC for some reason.
At least it is still chugging through the ligands, despite what the score is.
Yay!
Moments ago my machine went over the 50,000 mark.
How is everyone else doing? Anyone else need a bean update?
I'm working on it. I've got a 233Mhz working on it. My "workhorse" is out of town though.
Way to go Joshie poo!
ok. I joined. It just finished the very first section it was doinf (smallpox) and im not showing up on the member area of their site. no bigie though.
Well done & welcome on board.
I have become a UBBDev Haxxor member...
So far i'm at 1201 points... It DOES pays to have a computer always on and never in use eating up bandwidth!
A jelly bean for me too please.
Time to go hang gliding...
Thanks for helping. The bean is yours
I'm ready for Silver. FINALLY made it past the 25,000 mark.
[]
JoshPet said:I think even sassy is doing this? Sassy - how is it coming? [/]
i just found this.
being that other than the last couple of weekends, my computer is only on for a few hours a day with a couple of windows open...
i just hit 1500 points like 10 minutes ago.
I'm creeping up to 250,000, at which time I will retire two of my machines that run 24/7. My electricity bill is just insane with all of these machines running all day. Not that i mind spending a few hundred dollars in helping fight cancer, but I need to limit it's activity to when I'm only using the computer
Great work all!
Sassy - it all counts.
Congrats on Silver Slayer
Coffee please!
Your wish is my command - well done - keep up the good work.
The team has just passed 40 million points
Keep up the good work
I was at 9,656 and my last result bumped me up to 10,000 even. Now what are the odds of that? Bronze please
Yay donJulio!
WTG TEAM on 40 million points!!
us - we'll have cancer beat in no time.
i'm gonna be a blue bean forever
You can do eeeet!
Leave your computer on all the time.
you gonna pay my electric bills pookie?
Computer's dont use that much electric
[]
Omegatron said:Computer's dont use that much electric [/]
I'm going to have to beg to differ. Ever since I've been running UD my electric bill has increased dramaticaly
Of course, I'm running 4 machines too. But I'm paying at least 20 dollars more a month when the machines run and are crunching numbers 24/7 compared to when they weren't and they were in power saving mode most of the day.
I plug mine into next doors supply
Is that a prearranged thing? You provide the machine, they provide the power, or is it one of those selfless things where they don't even know they're helping to fight cancer?
haha
Yeah I don't mind.. it just kinda bothers me I'm helping to fight cancer, but the electric company is getting some of that money
But either way, I'm approaching 250,000 points, and at that time I'm going to retire my main workhorse machine to scheduled UD times to try and reduce my monthly electric bill, especially considering that it is going to be a long cold winter, and our gas prices are going through the roof
Here's an interesting experiment for those of you running 2+ machines... shut them all down (if you can) go out to your power meter and watch how fast the dial spins...
Then, go inside, power them all up, monitors too and THEN look at that dial... There is a marked difference. hehe
I think mine is spinning so fast, if I could somehow harness that disk I could go back in time!
There is a marked difference in power usage though as I run more machines in my home. hehe
Well, I'm just a a thousand or two points away from 250,000 and the next color bean!
So hook me up
I'm still not a coffee bean
Oh I missed the request before. - sorry.
woohoo, thanks
Looks like I finally have enough for bronze. Wooo.
It'll take months to get to the next level with the PC I'm using. LOL
Sounds like its time for an upgrade. When you're done with the upgrade you can say: "Looks like the fight against cancer just got a bigger gun" in your best Stallone voice.
As much as I'd like to upgrade, I'm not running the software on my home PCs, I don't like leaving them on 24/7.
The one it's running on is on my work machine... which happens to be a very sloooow Compaq.
But every little bit counts right?
Congrats.
What? What'd I break?
That's wierd - Jeremy what was it before?
It was just my head, it has been off and on showing up and not lately.
Oh no Jeremy lost his head!
Josh has Offed Jeremy's head..
sup guys, I had this running on my comp for about a month and I was doing pretty good untill I went from a 20 gig to an 80. Well my question is, how much memory does it suck up. I really didnt notice my comp getting any slower at all but now that I got dsl network and my comp is always connected I was wondering if it would affect anything? If not Im going to re-load it up
Well, on my desktop, which is a 3GHz machine with 1GB of ram and windows, IE, and all of my normal processes running, I'm using about 650 MB of my available ram.
When I check the individual processes, the UD agent is taking about 12-15 MB of ram. So for me, it really isn't taking any ram, it is just eating up the idle CPU cycles is all.
Same w/ Jeremy. I think it's having the faster CPU that will get your proteins processed quicker. Even though it used really very little RAM, the more you have, the higher your machine score, which means more points for every result returned.
*****EDIT***********
I just noticed my Bronze bean is missing
I have a box to do this with.. I do Seti also.. but where can I download? that Link is a dead end says it was changed in february 2003... yadda yadda yadda
If you go here:
https://www.ubbdev.com/forum/haxxors.phpYou just need to go through the steps.
Slayer thats the link I was talking about.. its broken...
When I click the link:
Download the UD Agent from United Devices website.
It takes me to the grid.org website:
http://www.grid.org/download/gold/download.htmWhere it gives me the option to download the agent.
Ok now that link you just posted takes me to where I wanna go but the link that says Download the UD Agent from United Devices website. in the Instructions takes me to a page that says You have requested a page that does not exist or no longer exists on our site. Please verify the URL address you have entered is correct and try your request again. so they must have fixed the link...
[]
scroungr said:Slayer thats the link I was talking about.. its broken... [/]
There may still be some remaining broken links from when the site was moved to this server. If you run into any post them in a new thread, would you please, so that I can fix anything we find over the weekend. thanks
I need silver
Silver is yours
Keep up the good work,
Just started today.. got 246 pts for 7hrs work? is that good?
Sounds just fine - it all depends on the power of your PC - thanks for joining & keep up the good work.
Your points will get updated on the UD server at around Midnight GMT
Ian, how come the bean doesn't show up beneath my user name, but it does in my profile?
Hmm looks to be there to me... do you see the five stars? or ??

Looking okay from here
BTW a computer that is left on draws LESS power in a week then a computer that is turned off and on everyday.. scientific fact...
[]
scroungr said:BTW a computer that is left on draws LESS power in a week then a computer that is turned off and on everyday.. scientific fact...
[/]
If that computer is not used. Correct, a PC that is left on overnight and not doing anything and just sitting idle draws very little power thanks to power saving methods. But when that CPU is being worked to the max all night long it is drawing a TON of power.
I can almost heat my whole apartment with my computers all running UD
Having lost my Dad to Cancer a week before last Christmas, and today found out that my Mum's Cancer has returned after a very short period, and the outlook is not great - I say sod the cost.
Jeremy I don't know.. depends on alot of factors.. speed of processor.. amount of ram.. what its processing? I don't think a 2 Gig with 1 Gig Ram running this program would draw as much power if left on overnite as compared to the initial surge you get when you first turn on the same PC everyday.. In Fact my company tells the users to leave OUR supplied PC's on 24/7.. I mean we do this to push down patches at nite to our software but I also think it isn't that costly in power..
Well, as soon as my eletric bill comes in a few weeks I'll know for sure, because for the past 5 months I've just been letting these run UD non-stop. But my main two computers I am now shutting down at night, trying to see what the difference really is.
Scrounger - I have added a blue haxxor icon to your profile - thanks for helping.
Oh thanx
I didn't have to ask
That's weird. It's there now. However before I never had any stars because nobody had ever rated me. Maybe it's an issue w/ that mod and the regular rating system? I don't know.
You had a rating but it was a secret...
^^ lmoa.
ok. where can i go to see the rating for each image? I know its here somewhere. I want to see how many points I have to go for the next bean.
also, am I the only one that keeps getting the huge one? every one I get to process is over 100 and it take about 8 -9 hours to go through it. I used to get ones that were like 20-30 to process and I blew through them....
If you go here:
https://www.ubbdev.com/forum/haxxors.phpThey are listed on the left side.
The big vs small ones, I
think that is cancer vs smallpox. Either that, or maybe it just depends on the molecule.
ya, its cancer vs smallpox. but since i signed back up it has only did ligandfit and they have 110 ligands per research..
Okay time for me to get my Platinum bean
I'll pass that one over to Josh, I can't update fellow mods.
But Congratulations, & thanks for helping
Reminds me that I need to rebuild some of the computers that have given their lives to UD and get them going again. I could be sapphire in a few weeks if I do. I had one dual proc box burn a power supply (I have an extra) and one a chipset fan (I have an extra). I could, and should get them fixed and get myself back up to 20k points a week.
Thinking about those machines caused me to want to drag something up that I had read earlier in this thread.
Whomever said it was cheaper to leave your computer running instead of turning it off was mistaken. A moving part doesn't wear out when it is off. Your hard drives, fans, power supply, monitor, etc will all last longer if they are powered down, obviously. If you've ever replaced a hard drive that got the big click of death, leaving you scrambling for your data knows that there are costs associated with this. I'm not sure how the *proven fact* didn't take that into account. Second of all, with the CPU running at 100% (both CPUs in my case) you generate more heat. A lot of heat in a new computer. More heat means the fans speed themselves up. And maybe you need more fans. More voltage to the CPU(s) and to the fans means more draw on the power supply and more current drawn from wherever that is plugged into. Yup, raises your electricity bill. Three or 4 decent sized computers running at 100% for a month will definately make an impact on your electricity bill. One recently modern computer running 24/7 at 100% CPU will make an impact on your electricity bill.
That said, is it a LARGE cost to run several machines at your house doing UD 24/7? Heck no, it surely is not. A couple a bucks, maybe. For me, I figure the extra electricity equates to roughly the cost of one pack of cigarettes per month. The added wear and parts maybe 3 or 4 more. I can surely afford to smoke a few less packs per month and give that to medical science. Besides the obvious possible benefits for myself, if I needed a purely selfish reason, there are the numerous people that I have known or known of, throughout my lifetime that have died from cancer.
I for one, would pay the cost of a couple of packs of smokes to cure cancer. Anytime
For what it is worth, I don't think anyone here is NOT running it because it costs more in electricity. I just wanted to toss my 2 cents in.
Actually your correct in alot of ways and that was me who said that.. I get use to telling users to leave our PC's and Flats on 24/7 that it gets to be a catch-all.. We tell our customers to leave our PC's 24/7 because we want them to be able to get patches why they are asleep at nite. For home use your correct I probably wouldn't leave my PC on 24/7.. but in the business world I would...
IM still running 3 currently for 24.7. Ill let you know the increase of the bill from last month to this month when I get the bill
ps. hook me up with the second bean. I hit 10 g last night. took about 14 days running 2 p4 2.4mhz and a p3 700mhz running solid to go from 3500 to just over 10g in points....

Wow - great work!
Thanks PetJosh!
Take THAT you nasty cancer cells!
(Just imagine the PC is cancer
)
I'm really close to gold, this old Compaq at work has been dutifully chugging away for months now 24/7... Some of the tasks take 50+ hours for it to complete.
I run it on my laptop at home also but it's only on when I'm banging on the keyboard on my other PCs. When my PC room is finished I'll probably set up a box there to do nothing but run this all day.
I believe I've got 50k now for gold.
Alright Zack! You're the cancer haxxing maniac!
Well done Zackary - Gold is yours
Thank you.
At the current rate this old beast is crunching numbers, it took approximately 111 days to get from 25k to 50k....
So guess I'll pop back in 222 days (or approximately 12/11/2004) for my next rank!
Hopefully by then I'll have the opportunity (and room) to set up a better box.
Doing what I can, I've seen what cancer can do, I'd like to see it eradicated!

I think it is a bug. The moderators on my site do not have an edit user option after upgrading either. I have checked and double checked in the settings, and they have the ability to set to yes, I dunno.

Hi - what name are you going under on UD?
Was look for you on
http://www.statsman.info/udstats/343.html - but couldn't spot you
Just wondering you signed up for UD - but not for our team?
Team signup is at
http://www.grid.org/services/teams/team.htm?id=DDE39155-B626-4A01-A104-817F561929DF
I have signed up, well I think so anyway. I am still on 0 points as it is still doing the primary task.

Cool - the UD system will automatically add your name to the stats page - and the team page, once the first unit is complete - we will add your bean here
Thanks for joining & contributing
