My client is a well-funded company seeking to convert a successful UBB into a commerce site. Details are still being worked out, but in general they are looking to:

- Charge a monthly membership fee (14 day free trial).
- Have different tiers of membership allowing for various UBB usage permissions.
- Accept all major credit cards.
- Automated management of membership status and permissions.
- Set separate views for paid/unpaid customers.

Have you looked at the UBB.threads payment addon ("myPaymentPal" I think), or the upcoming eve platform ?
