In the upcoming month I will need to get myself a laptop and thus I have started looking around a bit. Been playing for a week with a Compaq presario 2700 (1.13 Gig, 20 gig HD, 256 Mb Ram, Ati Raseon, 15'' screen) not bad except for the touchpad (hate them wink )

Yesterday I stumbled uppon the Dell online shop they have some very nifty laptops (up to 1.7 GHz, geforce 4 etc.) and they have both touchpad and trackpoint.

Anyone has any feedback on dell's laptops? are they OK or do they break often is it cheap materials etc ...

If you own or use an other brand that you like (toshiba etc.) please let me know.

I wouldn't get Compaq. I have one and their service isn't so good. Dell seems to be good though. laugh

I have the Compar Armada M-700 which is near top of the line. it is a fantastic machine but cost nearly 4000 dollars. You'll be happy with the Dell laptops...and they do have great service.

I own a Dell 8100. All in all, I really like it. Some grips:

1) The bottom heats up majorly after an hour so putting it on your lap makes it uncomfortable.
2) The trackpoint sratches your LCD.

I have a Dell Latitude C610 (I think). PIII-IgHz, 512MB RAM, 20GIG HD, and CD-RW.

It's relatively new, and so far has spent most of its time docked.

It has both the eraser and the touchpad. I hate the touchpad and have it disabled. My unique style of typing is always brushing against it, so the eraser pointer is much better. Granted, I usually travel with a mouse in my bag anyway.

It's a lot better than my last Dell which was a CPx 400 or something like that.

I love the fact that it has internal phone and ethernet ports, and I don't have to bother with a network or modem card (granted, I do have a wireless card for when I want to surf from the backyard).

My company pretty much exclusively uses Dell laptops.

Those of us who use laptops here use Dell Inspiron 8100 laptops. I love mine. When my brother wanted a laptop I told him to get an Inspriron 8100. He did, he loves it. They are heavy for laptops, but real nice and durable. I don't mind the weight, it's only 7.8 lbs. Lugging it in and out of the car, on and off planes has nto been a hassle. It has no scratches or marks. It just works and works.

I have the large screenwith the good g-force card, 512 megs of RAM, the DVD, an 866 proc, Win2k. Make sure you have the faster hard drive, that's what makes the difference in terms of waiting for things to load or not.

Recommended highly. smile

I used a Compaq laptop at work last summer, and it was horrible. It crashed all the time and was a really big fat pain in the rear. Compaq as a company is also having big troubles, hence HP possibly buying them. If everyone else's testimonials weren't enough, I'm adding to the sentiment that you should go with Dell instead. smile

Dell hands-down. They have the best customer service and quality reputation overall.

They do? Well it just must be Compaq Australia then.

I've got a 14.1" iBook that works very well. It comes with Ethernet and modem built-in, plus two USB ports and one firewire port. I got it with an Airport card in it and it works seemlessly with my 802.11 WAP. I don't know what kind of work you will be doing with your laptop, but Apples come with Appleworks which I have found more than adequate.

I used to have a sony XG-18 (650Mhz PIII) and loved it, except for the fact that it was a bit slow. That is becuase sony loves to load a bunch of crap on it nothing a format doesn't take care of.

If money isn't an issue get a dell, the P4's are out now.

I have two Dell 7500s and love them. I've probably owned every brand of laptop and I've had only the best experience with Dell. I believe they are much more rugged and built to hold up even when abused or heavily used.

I will never buy a Gateway, Compaq, HP, or Toshiba laptop again. Had problems with the keyboards on all of them. Also, all the doors on the Gateway and Compaq broke within just a few weeks. The HP's drive failed the first year. The Toshiba's screen was too dark and it's CD always jammed. IBM wasn't too bad but it was and still is very overpriced.

The past couple weeks I've been thinking about how I could squeeze a Dell 8200 in the budget but April 15 is messing with my plans. mad

additionaly: (if I remember correctly) Dell has a customisation option. You can change/add components before buying smile

I heard P4 were cr*p compared to P3's I think it might be better to get a 1.3 GHz P3 than a 1.7 Ghz P4
