OK, I know its a programming language, and thats where I stop...um, knowing.

I just had a schedule switch at school and I'm taking "fundamentals of programming" this semester, and next semester (same hour, same teacher), I'm taking "Programming in C++"

Basically, what good is it? Is it useful, or even used in any web applications?

I'm taking "Programming for the Web" next semester too, but if you were sitting near enough to me right now you'd hear me laughing quite loudly at the prospect. I've seen the teacher's own website, and I can quite honestly say that I AM BETTER THAN HIM. But thats a tangent.

So, anybody have info on C++?

Let me see...

Every (that's a lie, but only just) modern application written for windows, linux or macos is written in C++. Including perl. Need i go on.

Just a thought

gruuviness.

Something not so gruuvy, but could be:
In "fundamentals of programming" (which I start tomarrow), we'll be using TrueBasic, which I had never heard of up until yesterday. Then second semester we'll be doing C++, and I'm still learning perl (kinda). It will be most excellent if I learn them all, but it will be a pain in the ass.

excuse my daftness, but if perl is written in C, why isn't it just called C, instead of perl?

Because Perl is a scripting language, and C is compiled >:0)

How dificult is it to learn C if I have Perl knowledge?

Mark: i realised i was lying a little, but i was trying not to be too confusing.

evil-empire: The Perl interpreter [sic] was written in C. That doesn't mean that the two languages are the same. Hell, most C compilers are written in C (long story).

Atom: Perl knowlege will only help in an abstract way. C is quite different. C++ is more different still.

Just a thought

Compiled "C" doesn't require the perl interpreter, every flippin time it wants to do somethin.. It's faster, BUT, let's say ubb was compiled c, there probably would not be any hacks. You'd need the source code, before it was compiled, add the hack, then compile it again..

(I think I got that right, feel free to correct.., anyone remember basic..LOL)

this is all bora-bora to me.

oh well. some true basic tutorial said that once I learn true basic, C, F, and java will all come easily. Hell, I don't even know that F is.

So I'll just start at the bottom and work up. if you know what I'm saying.

What they probably meant (I got the same babble in b.a.s.i.c class) is that the flow and structures are similar. Even basic had If/Then/Else and so on. It's considered a high level language where I believe fortran and rpg, etc.. were considered lower level languages. Basic was considered a high level language since it was near english terms, more syntax then code.

GEEEZ!!! I don't believe I remember that, wonder if I got it right..LOL

BASIC - Beginners all purpose instruction code
COBOL - common buisness oriented language
RPG - report generator
FORTRAN - Formula Translation

And the first language that started it all..

Aida, created for C. Babbages analytical engine, Aida Lovelace created a code using punch cards to program his "computer" he couldn't figure out how.. LOL Figures, behind every great man is a Woman..

TILT!! Class dimissed

Ever wonder where the term "bug in the program" came from? If anyone wonders, how long I've been staring at this infernal machine, I remember AT&T Dos 1.0..LOL And windows fit on one 5 1/4 360k disk..

my dad put a sticker on our monitor that says "INFERNAL MACHINE"

anyway, I figure that soon I'll be one of those cool indie people that nobody messes with, because hell, I'll know BASIC and I have apache.
