I've been working with searching and modifying Windows 2000 Active Directory from with a .pl document using Net::LDAP. It seems to me that it wouldn't be all that impossible to make UBB AD enabled. Since the threads and other data would still remain in flat files and just the members would be in the AD does it seem even remotely possible to do without a whole team of developers?

Unless that's an uber-speedy LDAP server, I wouldn't even consider it. Member record access is the #1 bottleneck currently.

Windows 2000 Active Directory is extremely fast and streamlined. It resembles NDS of course but is very efficient. A PIII 400 and 256 meg of ram makes an outstanding AD box as long as you set it up properly.
Edit: I forgot to mention that you have two choices for users in an AD, security and distribution. The distribution users don't have things like NTFS permission on objects and containers but the schema is much smaller and less complex than the security model. The distribution model is perfect for UBB.

If you wanna take a hack at it, go ahead... Replacing OpenProfile and OpenProfile2 should do the trick, though you'll want "dummy" copies in the Members directory Just In Case... perhaps they can be created on access from LDAP?

If you get it working, let me know... you'll then have the fourth (?) UBB ever to work with a database.
