[7]Upload both files into your dir to be pasword protected, CHMOD them to 755.
[8]Try to access that dir after refreshing

Should work just fine.
NOW... with all that said, You say your on HYPERMART? well, I think thats part of Virtualave. (from the same group).. SO You will have to do this:
[1]Go to http://www.virtualave.net/faqhtaccess.html and type in the password you want to use. then replace what you copied above in the SECOND <FONT COLOR="red">RED</FONT c> section and place the output of the Virtualave info AFTER the ":".
[2]Reupload the "*.htpasswd" file to your pass dir and CHMOD it to 755.
Virtualave, Hypermart, Go2Net use a different encription than most other sites.
