Hmm.. I don't konw how to tell it
-----
I download ubb.threads 6.2.3 and installed it on my home comupter for testing. Today I made decidion about uprade my forum from 6.1.1 to 6.2.3, but... I did it, but not exactly:
- manualy I modificed few mysql tables and manualy made upgrade. Why?
Because I wanted to save all my modfications and I don't want to change old posts mark (new post are mark by icon, not color).
And I did it, my forum work correctly

After 9h of hard work I can told everyone - It's possible

I hate doing things manually. Which is why I have not yet upgraded threads in quite some time. So when 6.3 comes out final, I will install that from scratch, then go through and the hacks that are necessary.

I find when I try to use beyond/compare and such, it takes me twice as long and I usually miss something which in the end breaks my board or some hack, and I have to start all over anyway

Yeah, if I'd done what he did, every time there was a problem, you'd never know if it was you.

6.2 was extensive changes. Every script was modified and the fundamental way threads works was changed. Normal upgrades only have a handful of scripts which might not be as bad.

I tried this with all my hacks from 6.2 to 6.3... but things were still goofy.
Best to start clean.

I mentioned this before, but what I did was compare my hacked 6.2.3 with a stock 6.2.3 in Beyond Compare. I clearly commented where all the hacks were. I then loaded my hacked 6.2.3 and the stock 6.3 b1 into Beyond Compare. I changed all that was nessecary, paying special attention to the commented hack sections of code.

Starting from scratch and re-adding hacks can sometimes be difficult. In the hack instructions it could tell you to look for some code, but that code has changed in the new release.

The most hair-pulling experiences are when I'm updating my personalized templates, whether for installing hacks or upgrading.

I always start clean - annoys my users though - but most things get added back fairly quickly.

However I always make sure I have a mirrored copy of my site - usually a tarball in case it all goes pearshaped
