My users have been hounding me to get a user map going to look up people in their area, seems like you could use the "location" field in a users profile to out put a user map. Here is one I found: http://www.godsofoffroad.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=;action=mmall;defmap=usa Looks like it is part of yabb, could we get something like that? Might get real crowded by state if you have a lot of users though, maybe show red pins by state, but when you click on any of them from one state it simply opens up a list by state, then users can browse from there. What do you think?
That's a great feature! Just some minutes ago I found another site with a similar user-map. Then I came here and found your suggestion, what a surprise

I really like the implementation, it covers the whole world and still is a clear display of all users locations. Looks simply perfect.

It's a Mod for YaBB: MemberMap 2.1.

Maybe we could ask the developer if we can port his mod over to ubbt.
I too have been struggling with this type of mod myself. We have a recovery list that people can use to see who ot call in their area if they get stuck. At one time we had a map of michigan just in plain HTML with an image map that had to be manually updated.

That got to be a real PITA so I scratched that and now I just made it so people can automatically enter data and display as a text list. I would eventually still like to do the map but I had no idea how that would work
After a closer look... looks like the Mod works with simple pixel-coordinates. The user has to place a pin on one of the available maps. So just the name of the map and x/y is stored in his profile.
That's just my guess, because you can't see any pins on the "Northamerica"-map, but eight on the "USA"-map. If it would work with longitude and latitude the pins could be displayed on every map that covers several smaller extracts.

I would prefer longitude and latitude - but anyway, a very nice mod!
This is a great feature !
Looking around YaBB has serveral nice features.
I especially like how they package their mods to be self applying.
*Bump* This would be a great mod for either UBB or IIP.

I have no clue if this would work..

But livejournal has a nifty way to do things...

www.livejournal.com ... Click on "by region"

they have something like this at albinoblacksheep.com

It would be cool if the map was displayed on your profile and you could put the pin in it from there and type a short message that displays when your icon is hovered over.

This would be great for me because the forum I run is for nurses, mainly travel nurses who travel all across the country. They would love this for keeping up with where others are at.
What?

They have that Triumph the insult comic dog one where he makes fun of the star wars nerds. That is the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. I watch it once a week!

Would someone be more motivated to make this hack if there was money involved? I am willing to pay for something like this. I think it is a great idea and it would be an awesome addition to my site......anyone?
I'd like for them to be able to type in a short message as well. For instance, "Jane Doe, rn, on assignment in San Diego California" whenever the mouse is hovered over their cursor.
I would have created this for a fee as well but I'll leave that up to Dave_L. I didn't want to barge in. LoL
shoot, I dont' care who does it, maybe you can "collaborate".

hey, wait, does this give me bargaining power?

I love this site!
