Digg Cihost (Eileen?) Digg it
I'm once again shopping for a new host. I had recently been on a friend's server but things got a bit complicated and that's no longer working out (long story).

Anyhow, a few months back I was heavily researching webhosts... I'm a bit rusty now. At the time, I was hearing horror stories about Communitech, and to a lesser extent CiHost. People still tell me to stay away from Communitech, but I haven't heard too much about CiHost lately. This isn't necessarily good or bad.. although it seems like "bad" hosts tend to get highly talked about, and maybe the lack of complaining is an indication of better times at CI.

So has anyone had recent experience with them? Or heard anything one way or the other?

I think I remember Eileen saying she used them a while back, along with a few others on the board... and that's why I'm asking for opinions here.

Thanks,
A33

Touch wood, CIHost has been running well lately. They don't have the ultra-cheap special deals they used to have but they have all the stuff you need to run w3t so I'd say go for it.

Thanks for the feedback.

They do have a fairly nice special being offered right now- http://www.cihost.com/include/index.php3?zone=../products_services/limited_time_offer.php3 . This is what made me start to consider them again, I was especially interested in the 1 Gig of disk space.

I'm curious though, they say "unlimited bandwidth", and we all know there's no such thing... so at what point will they start to complain? Are they strict with CPU usage?

Hey, I'm glad they started doing that again. It makes it even more sensible to go with them. They reckon about 12 GB is a cutoff point - after that they start messing you about. They first of all froze the WOPR account, then started charging 'overage' and moved the site to a 'high usage' server. Woody ended up getting his own server after that... grin

I'm using OLM/Webaxxs. I've been there for over a year and everything has been fine.

I especially like the prices:

400MB disk space and 8GB of traffic per month, plus all the things necessary to run wwwthreads for only $14.99 per month. Tech support isn't great concerning mySQL but they're just fine with nearly everything else.

http://www.webaxxs.net

OLM is in my top 3 list right now. I've heard mostly good things from everyone I've talked to. My first choice was originally Burst.net, they had some very nice packages and outstanding support. Unfortunately, things have been going down hill very quickly over there. Messageboards dedicated to talking about webhosts were highly praising the company a couple months ago, now they're damning them. They're rumored to have hours of down time every couple days.

I think I've decided against Cihost. I just recently was made aware that they have a class action lawsuit being put together against them from a group of former customers. That makes me more than a little hesitant to go with them, especially if they were to lose the case...

On a webmaster newsgroup I follow occasionally I have read numerous complaints against CIHost, the class action you refer to, and court action taken by the company themselves against customers who won't pay for services they claim were not provided etc. etc. It did surprise me that CIHost seemed to be host of choice for many using WWWThreads. I felt it wasn't my place to warn people off them because I don't use them and I would not be coming from a position of experience. People on here who do use them seem to find them ok.
Thanks for the thoughts on OLM, they sound good.

Darren.
http://www.bullpen.com.au

They used to be by far the 'best bang for the buck' and those of us who stayed after the great upgrade fiasco, from which this class action sprang, were given an even better deal but their prices are higher now so OLM looks very attractive.

Huh, that sorta' sounds like where Hostpro is heading. I've had a small site with them for 24 months (seperate from my forum site, which is at OLM), and when I first started with them, they were unbeatable. But after being bought and sold countless times, and after the new owners implemented 'upgrades', it's been a disaster.

I'm switching the site over to OLM this month.

Funny, the more hosting companies spring up, the harder it is to find a good one....

Standardhost seems to offer a LOT for only 19.99 a month, I am far from an expert at any of this(just getting my site and board together) but they sound good, really good.

Anybody heard about them or have any experience?

Another name that is worth checking out: http://www.tierranet.com

Have they got CGI::FastTemplate? Use PerlDiver http://www.scriptsolutions.com/programs/free/Perldiver/index.html to find out.

eileen,

for some reason, that direct link doesn't work... you have to go to http://www.scriptsolutions.com/programs/free/ and then select the PerlDiver 1.1 script...

Matt

How very wierd. This seems to work:

http://www.scriptsolutions.com/programs/free/perldiver/index.html

although it looks identical!

Ah! Wait a mo - it's the old case-sensitivity gotcha.
