I've been looking around for a good Java/HTML chat interface I can tie into the communty that we're working on. I *think* I might have the double registration problem fixed thru use of cookies, but I really want a good chat package to tie into it.

Allof the packages I've seen out there are for NT servers and that just won't do.

The only other option I've found is MultiChat, but their pricing structure is just frikking ridiculous and it's a co-hosting solution with them embedding links to their forums in your chat rooms.

Ilooked at Volano, too, but they don't have and HTML interface included, and their pricing is WAY higher than anything I've seen for NT servers and doesn't include an HTML interface.

I'vesearched at linuxplanet and linuxapps and the only thing I found even halfway decent was LucidChat, and it's a C non-java environment.

Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated []/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/]

Webmaster: @websites http://www.atwebsites.com

Have you had a look at this?
http://chat.spectro.net/chat/
My IP charges $10 a month for it so they must think it's OK.

Come to think of it - most IPs don't allow third party chat scripts so it's probably best just to encourage all your members to get ICQ and publish their ICQ addresses. Then all the chatting will not overload your own server.

Does anybody know what this might mean - "(para is OK)"? Is 'para' some kind of script?

I appreciate the help Eileen []/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/]

We aren't worried about the ISP's since we just leased a brand spanking new Dual 600 PIII[]/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/]

I checked out those chapt proggies, but they aren't *quite* what we're looking for. We are wanting a Java/HTML interface so our WebTV'ers can chat, too. As much as I hate WebTV, it's growing as fast as the PC market, so them people have to be taken into consideration. I just wish they would hurry up and make their browsers compatible with web technology.

Webmaster: @websites http://www.atwebsites.com

Martin there are some great discussions of chat programs in the forum I moderate at virtual promote.

Check out chat topics at http://www.gethighforums.com

Since the content was mostly NOT mine on those I feel better linking you to that sites than copying the information --Renee

We use two java interfaces for chat. One is Palace, and can be found at http://www.thepalace.com. Palace is a great little server, and chat interface with Avitars, and graphical backgrounds. They have servers for Linux, and NT. Palace is alse used by ZDTV. If you would like to see an example of this interface you can try our test page at http://chat.infosite.org/test1.htm

The second interface we use from Mirosoft. It is a java interface for an IRC server, and works with many IRC servers on linux and NT. It comes as part of the Microsoft Chat SDK.

This kit has Java and ActiveX chat interfaces and examples on designing your own interface. The kit is missing one thing, an IRC server. Two good things about the Microsoft Chat SDK is that it is [:red]FREE, and it works well with Navagator and IE on Linux, MAC, and Windows. If you would like download the ChatSDK, or see a test chat room go to this URL. http://www.infosite.org/chat/sdkdownload/chatsdk2.htm.

[:blue]*** Please Keep in mind that our chat rooms are test rooms, and may fail ***

-Ken Torbeck [:blue]WWW.INFOSITE.[:red]ORG Special Needs & disAbilities Info. Eileen,

I assume when they say "para" they're talking about ParaChat -> http://www.parachat.com/parachat.htm .

The reason they say "para is OK" is that it's hosted remotely... which obviously means all the load is on parachat.com's servers, not your own.

You might want to look at DigiChat - http://www.digichat.com. It is JAVA and is what we currently use. Very robust and scaleable the only users we have found who can't use it are WebTV users. The cost is not that bad (they have different options) and you can test it for free. Runs on Linux, Windows and I think the mac. Also they will do chat hosting if needed. The security is much better because ours is a "members only" chat and does not use IRQ so only our members can connect to it.

Just my two cents.

I appreciate the tip there on the digichat.

the problem is, we have quite a few webtv users. The only java chat I can find that is webtv compatible is ichat, and they don't have a version that will run on linux yet and aren't too fortcoming about a release date...

Webmaster: @websites http://www.atwebsites.com

I do understand. We made a decision not to support WebTV users because we only had a hand full out of 800,000 users we had. WebTV has so many limitations - good luck and do let me know if you find something.
