The red around them seems kinda yuck. Maybe somebody would be willing to create some nifty 3D smileys?

If anyone does create any they need to be no more than 15x15 in size, with a transparent background.

Where would they go? I don't want the board cluttered up. I think I'd just like them as markup. For that they're smashing.

Maybe create a new var in w3tvars.pm that specifies the directory to look for the smiley's in? Then you can include multiple styles of smiley's with the program, and let the admin decide which one they like best.

Oh, and how 'bout some smiley's that rotate? []/forumimages/smile.gif[/]

Well, since people seem not to like these icons for new posts, I made up a set myself. My idea would be to post an icon that was a different color to signify new, so I made them in a slew of colors. For the sake of brevity here, I'll just post the yellow ones and if anybody likes them you can download other colors from http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/

[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/blush.gif[/] blush
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/cool.gif[/] cool
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/crazy.gif[/] crazy 8)
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/frown.gif[/] frown
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/laugh.gif[/] laugh
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/mad.gif[/] mad
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/shocked.gif[/] shocked
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/smile.gif[/] smile
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/tongue.gif[/] tongue :P
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/wink.gif[/] wink

For this board, I'd probably make the standard icons yellow and the "new" icons orange. And then provide alternative icon packs tha people can download to match their site.

Anyway, hope these are useful to someone.

I really like those, and the idea of using yellow for the read ones, and orange for the new ones. They look great!

Hehe, love 'em. I think the 3D effect just makes them look grubby tho.
And I still don't want them splatted all over - just as markup - so please, Scream, make that bit optional.

Eileen,

I think the idea here (in addition to Markup) is to allow people to put an icon on the subject of their post to give readers a feel for what's inside before opening it. Course I may be wrong, too. []/forumimages/wink.gif[/]

Here's the smile guy with the 3D on []http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/smile.gif[/]
And here he is with the 3D off []http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/smile2.gif[/]

Opinions anyone as to whether I should make them all flat? When viewing them on a light-colored background, they either need the 3D on or they need a dark outline, because the icon colors are all light. Lemme know.

Yes, that is the point, but it will be an option. For those that don't want it they can just use the normal folder icons. As far as which images. What I would like to do is just include a standard set, your 3d yellow and orange and then have it so where users can download a different set so they just drop a different color or style in.

That's what I figured. You wouldn't want to have people downloading 50 icon sets along with the program. If you want to make them available on your site, go for it. I'll also leave them up on my ISP page and add a few "flat" sets for anyone who wants them, so if you just want to point to my page, that's fine with me too.

Glad you like them. []/forumimages/smile.gif[/] I wanted to extend the markup set for my site, and thought you might be able to use them as well.

Perfect. As long as it's optional and we have a chance to use different sets it should fit the bill for everyone.

I love your flat ones - I'll grab them as soon as you have them up.

If you have any ideas for other icons to go along with posts, I'd love to hear them / see them. I'd like to see enough of a variety so people can choose an icon to describe different types of posts. So far the only one that I can think of that the smileys don't cover would be a question, or just a normal post. It's not real important, but it's a thought. So any suggestions in this area would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if I got it right: these icons will be used instead/along of/with the standard folder icons?
If so, if we take into account the fontsize, a 15 pixels high icon will change the "slick" aspect of the current board layout. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

They will be used in place of the current folders. Again, this will be an option. On profession business sites, they would probably want to go with the normal folders, but on informal / fun sites they might choose the icons.

The one thing I have tried to do, and I will keep trying to do, is not push a configuration on anyone. Anytime I add new features, I will try to make them optional. Just because I like something, or somebody else likes something, doesn't mean everyone is going to like it[]/forumimages/wink.gif[/].

An excellent philosophy.

Here are a few more icons. I had a hard time coming up with anything more that what you'd already done.

[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/question.gif[/] question
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/exclamation.gif[/] urgent
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/lightbulb.gif[/] idea or solution to a problem (looks like I need to lighten this one a bit for dark backgrounds)
[]http://www.asan.com/users/phoenix/smilies/brightyellow/chat.gif[/] chat request

I'd still like to come up with one for announcements and one for link. And there are a couple things that I'm not sure if they relate to sites other than my own... awards and "fluff" (a person's poetry or whatever).

Let me know if I ought to make full sets of these and if anyone has suggestions for what other icons could be useful, please let me know.

Yes, I think it would be great to have full sets of the icons. Even if some of them wouldn't be used on a majority of the sites, it would be nice to have a variety for users to choose from.

I like the ones you have added so far, they look great!

To the red border of the icons - oh please do keep them, these yellow faces is terrible enough if you should not keep them all yellow. Whith the red one at least keep them inside the design here, which BTW is part of what attract.

Still usability / accessibility should have a higher priority than gadgets - that is if a forum is looking for new posters and not only insiders...?

BTW2 - the spellcheck was a clumsy feature, meaning anyone need that feature would be better off by using a word processor and then post. That is advisable as one then also can read the posts one is responding to, another minus here...

BTW3 - in general, the "posting feature" is far behind the user ability for the "reader". A professional forum will be more and more important for many sites - and here the "readers" part is maybe the best I've ever seen!

The posting part get unfortunately my "down thumb" - I'm afraid this part will keep a lot of potential users out...

Sorry for the vinager part, but if I did not like the "reader" part that much - I would not have bothered to post ((-:
