Hmm...While there are custom style-templates (e.g., Bookie's, Allen's & LK's, etc.) for UBB I've noticed that there aren't many "UBB-Themed" template packs out for public use. Custom graphics and all. I'm not referring to "Styles" but actual template themes. smile

hmm, I don't quite understand what you mean... Bookie's templates do have custom graphics and all confused ... if you mean to add new buttons and stuff, like a major rewriting of the UBB, you'll have to edit many CGI files and it'd take ages for the creator to do it..

Bookie's template is basically what I'm referring to, but there is a twist. smile You (LK), Allen and Bookie are probably the only people who have consistently put out different templates for public use and this is why I grouped you three together. smile

Template hacks, as far as I've been around, have always been popular items with the members. I've also noticed that the majority here rather use multihacks rather than inserting and modifying the mods/hacks manually...It's convenient to have an all-in-one step install.

Now I understand first hand what it is to edit every UBB file (.pl and .cgi) manually but what I was thinking is rather different. What if the "UBB Template Themes" centered around the $TBT/$TBB tags and were controlled via CP? This template set will allow any user to insert different themes without doing much work. All they need to do is install the "Template Theme" pack which is universal to all theme applications.

For example: A user will install the "Template Theme" pack which is primarily .pl files and additional hacking (if necessary). A one time install. The pack may include a generic theme. If the user wishes to install a new them he/she can download "Graphic Themes" provided by the graphic/template designers here. The "Graphic Themes" are just the graphics that will border the $TBT/$TBB tags...No further .pl files to modify. These graphics will be added via CP. Additional graphics (e.g., buttons), within the theme, can also be applied easily since UBB already has that set up in Style Templates via CP.

I hope that I didn't make this more confusing but I think the idea is realistic and it may be something that the members will love to have. Anyway, what do you think? If you need me to clarify I'll be happy to. smile

so basic image sets with common names for tbt/tbb so they could be traded out with different themes?

Sure, that works, but modifying just the TBB and TBT is going to have different results in every forum, and the effects would not be so great. The best thing you could do with the TBB and TBT alone would have a graphic wrap around of the table. Thats it... template mods are so much more than just a different graphic around the table, there needs to be a bigger difference. You can't add gradients on category bars or title bars with just TBT and TBB... I don't think it would be worth while to do that way. I've been tinkering with threads templates last week, and if you havent seen how that system works, you haven't seen anything. Every template file edited in the CP, very easily, and very much CSS based. Thats the problem with template modding with classic, the base files are not CSS... it makes it much more time consuming to go through each file and adding a gradient to every title bar opposed to just making a class for it in a matter of minutes. Though I doubt CP/CSS based templates will happen for classic, it would really help to make more template packs.

Basically yes. thumbsup So many UBB users are customizing their board. Some do not have the time, knowledge or both. These "common" template themes will give the users a chance to design a board with minimal effort. smile

--------------

Bookie - The $TBT/$TBB graphic wrap-arounds will be the focus. $TBT/$TBB tags can be applied anywhere. On my board alone I am using 5-6 different tags. In the Topic page alone, within each user's post there are 2-3 $TBT/$TBB tag sets. smile Most do not go to the extent that I do but that is the preference of the Template designer.

Implementing CSS will be more difficult, but it is possible. For now, however, we can start of slowly, by just adding modified $TBT/$TBB tags for the graphics wrap-around. I really think that this can work and catch on with most UBB users. Only hardcore/chronic/un-interested wink users will opt a different method. smile

Yeah, it would be good for users just looking to add a little enhancement to their forums... X had this idea a while ago, it is basically a skinnable UBB.

Interesting...I forgot about that. I don't recall using common Template sets but the general principle (of skinning) is the same. smile
