Category backgrounds - if you are using 6.1 check out the 6.1 beta hacks for Category BG hack, if ur using 6.xx check out those forums for gradient hack

Who's Online Column - I could tell you, but i doubt the author of the site would like that, maybe find who it is and PM them or ask on their board
