O'Reilly's books are very good. Can anyone recommend any others? [Linked Image]

Nope...O'Reily is the best, and no others should really be considered >:0)

Start with Learning Perl and the Perl Cookbook.

I've never used O'Reily's books. I bought a book at media play that is pretty good. It has some good examples and covers quite a bit. And when I first started I bought CGI Programing 101, it's ok. but I dunno if i'd recommend it...

CGI101 is decent, but is a little, I don't know... O'Reily is still recomended. www.cgi101.com for a free preview of the book. I think you can see the first few chapters.

I would also like to point out that you should avoid the "Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days" book from Sam's Publishing at all costs. Many, many reasons to avoid(ask if ya want any)

Because Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days is one of the absolute biggest pile of **** books ever written for Perl. Its a close second to Perl For Dummies, that's how bad it is.

For an indepth scathing review, Check this out

Thanks for the advice Mark.... After reading part of that review, I've learned my lesson. I will not even look at that book, let alone crack it open. Nope... not me.

3 from o'reilly:

Programming Perl 3ed
Perl cookbook
Learning Perl (though now pretty outdated)

There's also Elements of Programming With Perl by Andrew Johnson which I've never seen but have heard great things about on c.l.p.m, and Beginning Perl by Simon Cozens, also which I haven't really looked at, but had a quick flip through and it looked good. Plus, I read an article of his in which he talked about what makes a good perl book and I agreed with him on everything. so if he stayed true to that, it will be a good book.,

I recently picked up the Perl CD Bookshelf by O'Reilly. It has the Nutshell book and a CD.

The CD is very cool. Six books are on the CD in html format. Everything is cross referenced with hyperlinks, so navigation is quite easy. And the best part is the combined index. Very reasonably priced, too.

Yeah I've heard that O'Reilly books are really good, but why exactly?
Is this because of the way they explain everything imaginable about PERL?
Or the way they make it easy, for newbies (like me), to learn PERL as easy as possible?

Because, for the most part, they were written by the guys who wrote Perl itself. And... Larry Wall works for O'Reilly.

They give accurate examples, well structured, technically correct, and properly typeset books.
