How about a editor in the admin menu like the template editor, but you can edit the php files. Plus having it automatically backup every file (php & tmpl) that you edit by renaming it to xxx.php.bak1, xxx.php.bak2 etc. or something like that. And an option to restore last backup too while we're at it!
